The season is called “Season 4: Override,” and that’s not a guess — it’s the name given in the live configuration served by Epic’s own content API. That’s the same source the game client pulls battle pass names, competitive events and survey text from.

When we wrote about update 42.00, we held off calling it a season launch: Epic’s status channel hadn’t said a word about a season, and we don’t guess. Now the proof has turned up in a different official source.

What’s actually in the configuration

The current season’s battle pass is labelled “Season 4: Override.” Sitting in the same list right next to it are “Season 3: Runners” and “Season 2: Showdown.” Elsewhere in that same file, Epic writes out the full names: “Chapter 7 Season 2” and “Chapter 7 Season 3.”

Put those together and you get the fourth season of Chapter 7.

The competitions section lists tournaments with the IDs s42_override_default and s42_bandicoot under the shared name “Override Series” — including “Override Series: Crash Bandicoot Cup” in Reload mode. The styling files for them are named fneco-42-00.

In other words, the Override branding is tied to the 42.00 build — the same one that shipped on 20 August 2026, when Epic ran scheduled maintenance from 06:00 to 11:00 UTC.

How Overrides work

There are two types of Override, and the difference between them comes down to who the effect touches.

Type Who it affects
Squad Override Only the player who picked it and their squad. Doesn’t touch anyone else in the match.
Match Override Everyone in the match. One player picks it, but it applies to allies and opponents alike.

You activate them at Override Consoles. The consoles sit dormant on the map and switch on as the match plays out. Whoever reaches a console first picks the effect, and it holds for the rest of the match. So this isn’t a personal buff you can grab whenever you like — it’s a spot on the map worth fighting over.

Match Override is the more interesting case here: one player effectively rewrites the rules for the whole lobby, and everyone affected had no say in the choice. How much that shifts a match’s pace is a question for the game itself rather than the configuration — worth keeping the basics of match size and length in mind alongside it.

Why it’s clear this is already live

The clearest signal is Epic’s own survey. Players are asked to rate two statements:

  1. “It was clear who my chosen Override would affect — my squad or the whole match.”
  2. “The Override I picked did what I expected.”

Those are questions you put to someone who’s already tried something. You don’t survey a feature that’s still on the drawing board.

What we’re not claiming

⚠️ We’re not naming a start date for the season, and we’re not naming an end date. Those fields aren’t filled in the configuration, and we’re not going to make them up. The only date in this piece is 20 August 2026, and it’s tied to the 42.00 update shipping — not to the season’s timeframe.

We’re also not listing which specific effects Override offers or how many there are — that’s not in our data.

If you want a point of comparison with what changed before this, we’ve got a breakdown of update 41.30.

In short

Fortnite’s current season is the fourth season of Chapter 7, “Season 4: Override,” and that’s visible straight from Epic’s own content API. The season’s headline mechanic is Overrides at consoles that switch on as a match progresses — some affect only your squad, others affect everyone in the lobby.

Frequently asked questions

What season is Fortnite on right now?

In the live configuration served by Epic's own content API, the current season's battle pass is named "Season 4: Override." Sitting alongside it in the same list are "Season 3: Runners" and "Season 2: Showdown," and elsewhere in the same file Epic spells it out directly as "Chapter 7 Season 2" and "Chapter 7 Season 3" — which puts this at the fourth season of Chapter 7.

When does Season 4: Override start and end?

We're not naming dates here. The season's start and end date fields in that configuration are empty, and we don't have another official source with dates. The only firm date in this piece is 20 August 2026, when update 42.00 shipped.

What's the difference between Squad Override and Match Override?

Squad Overrides only affect the player who picked one and their squad — nobody else in the match is touched. Match Overrides affect everyone in the match: one player picks the effect, but it applies to allies and opponents alike.

How do you activate an Override?

At Override Consoles. The consoles sit dormant on the map and switch on as the match progresses. Whoever reaches a console first picks the effect, and it stays active for the rest of the match.

Is Override already live, or is it planned?

It's live. Epic is running player surveys about the Override experience — asking people to rate statements like "It was clear who my chosen Override would affect" and "The Override I picked did what I expected." Questions phrased that way are put to someone who's already tried the feature.

How does Override connect to update 42.00?

Through the competitive events. The competitions section lists events with the IDs s42_override_default and s42_bandicoot under the name "Override Series," and the styling files for them are named fneco-42-00 — so the Override branding is tied to the 42.00 build.
