Fishing shooters on Steam: nine games out of 596
Contents
How to Fish is a fishing game where you shoot. That is not our invention: 206 players applied the Shooter tag on its Steam page, making it the fifth most-voted tag after Multiplayer (283), Online Co-Op (257), Fishing (228) and Co-op (223). So we checked how many games in the catalogue actually combine fishing with shooting.
The answer: nine out of 596. That is 1.5 % of the Fishing-tagged catalogue.

Catalogue snapshot taken on 31 August 2026. Review counts are the ones Steam shows in the tooltip on each game card.
One game holds 96 % of the category
Together the nine games have 16,319 reviews. How to Fish accounts for 15,660 of them — 96.0 %. The other eight combined have 659, which is less than How to Fish averages in 11 hours: over its first eleven days the game gathered 15,660 reviews in the same tooltip units, about 1,424 a day.
The gap to second place is 45.1x. DREAMWILD, with 347 reviews, launched back in 2022 and has had nearly four years to gather them.
The median review count among the other eight is 38.5. Half of Steam’s fishing shooters never reached forty reviews in their entire lifetime.
The niche existed — it was just empty
Do not confuse cause with effect. The category did not appear with How to Fish: all eight of the others shipped earlier, the oldest back in 2020. The fishing-plus-guns idea was tried long before Dazed Games; we did not check who developed these games and make no claim about how many teams that is.
What changed is scale. The earlier attempts were tiny — three of the nine have exactly 11 reviews each, barely past the threshold at which Steam starts showing a score at all.
The scores here are not bad
The median positive share across the nine is 88 %, above the median of the whole fishing catalogue (83 %). Small fishing shooters are liked by the few people who bought them; almost nobody bought them.
The highest score is not How to Fish but Critical Fishing at 96 % on 50 reviews. The lowest is Ocean Fishooter at 63 % on 11. At those sample sizes the difference between 63 % and 96 % is a handful of people.
Price: How to Fish sits exactly in the middle
Seven of the nine are paid, two are free. The median paid price is 159.00 UAH, which is exactly what How to Fish costs. The spread is wide: from 16.00 UAH for Salt and Sails to 399.00 UAH for Project Hunt.
What we are not claiming
Nine is a lower bound, not an exact count. Steam displays only about seven top tags on a game card. A game that carries the Shooter tag but did not have it among the seven shown was not counted. The true number of Shooter-tagged games in the catalogue may be higher.
We only counted the Fishing-tagged catalogue. A shooter that features fishing but lacks the Fishing tag is not in the 596-game sample at all.
These review counts are not global. The Steam card tooltip counts reviews written in your interface language, and only Steam purchases. For How to Fish that is 15,660, while the full API counter gives 44,256. The numbers in the table are comparable with each other because they were read the same way, but they are not a game’s total.
The ordering is ours. Steam does not sort by review count; we sorted the rows ourselves by the tooltip figure.
We read prices on the Ukrainian storefront. We did not read US prices for these eight titles and will not convert them.
