Stack, Chest and Shulker Box Calculator
Enter an amount of items (or chests, or shulker boxes) and the calculator instantly shows the equivalent in every other container, plus the most compact way to pack it all.
How we calculate
By default a stack holds 64 items. Some items cap lower: 16 (ender pearls, eggs, snowballs, signs, empty buckets, banners or honey bottles, for instance — but NOT a filled bucket of water, lava or milk, those do not stack at all) or 1 (anything with durability, like tools or weapons). Pick the stack size that matches what you are counting.
A single chest has 27 slots, a double chest has 54. A shulker box also has 27 slots, but it cannot be placed inside another shulker box. A player’s main inventory (excluding armor and the off-hand slot) is 27 slots plus a 9-slot hotbar, 36 in total. The calculator leads with the most compact combo it can: double chests fully packed with shulker boxes first, then loose shulker boxes, then stacks, with anything left over counted item by item.
The block count for a build is plain geometry, not a game fact: volume is width × height × depth, and for a hollow shell (walls, floor and ceiling only) the interior is subtracted from that volume.

Questions and answers
How many items fit in a double chest?
A double chest has 54 slots. At the default stack size of 64 that is up to 3456 items, if everything stacks.
Why do a shulker box and a single chest hold the same amount?
Both have 27 slots — that is just a matching slot count, not the same kind of storage: a shulker box can be carried around.
Can a shulker box go inside another shulker box?
No. Shulker boxes cannot be nested inside each other, so the calculator only ever counts them as containers for stacks, never nested.
Why does a bucket sometimes count as 16 and sometimes as 1?
An empty bucket stacks up to 16, but a filled one (water, lava or milk) does not stack at all, so pick the stack size that matches which bucket you mean.
What does a "hollow" build mean in the block count?
It is walls-only mode: the interior is subtracted from the full volume, so only the outer shell is counted.
