All How to Fish Bosses In Order: Bait and Tactics
Contents
Bosses in How to Fish do not behave the way they do in most games: none of them shows up on its own. Every one has to be summoned with bait, and every bait has to be earned. “Finishing the game” here really means “working out who wants what”.
The short version: who, where, and on what
| Island | Boss | Summoned with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — lighthouse | Spider crab | Empty beer can from the old man on the bench |
| 2 — forest | Giant piranha | Leech bait |
| 3 — desert | Pufferfish | Carrot from the vacationer |
| 4 — rocks | Albatross | Tuna body placed in the middle of the island |
| 5 — volcano | Bowhead whale, then its mutated form | Fish bucket from the hazmat NPC |
Boss 1 — spider crab (lighthouse island)
The easiest fight in the game, and the stats agree: 91.5% of players own the achievement. The bait is an empty beer can. To get it, buy a beer and hand it to the old man on the bench; he gives the can back. The can then goes on the crab rod.
The fight asks exactly one thing of you: do not stand next to it. The crab strikes in a straight line, and a shotgun at mid range settles the matter. If you have not bought a weapon yet, run the first-hour starting route first.
Boss 2 — giant piranha (forest island)
A villager stands on a rock in the forest and wants leeches. Give him three and you unlock the leech bait that summons the giant piranha. 82.8% of players hold this achievement: the drop-off between bosses one and two is small.
The piranha is fast and aggressive but has no second phase. The common mistake is shooting from the boat: on the water you lose both mobility and your firing angle.
Boss 3 — pufferfish (desert island)
This is where the game first demands that you understand its economy. The bait is a carrot, handed over by a vacationer who wants a rare species brought to him: a needlefish, a seahorse or a fish in an aquarium. In other words, you first have to not sell something valuable.
The pufferfish has two phases, and the second begins at exactly 50% health. This is the fight where most players die for the first time, and it is the one the developers nerfed in patch 1.0.4. 70.5% of players hold the achievement.
The same island has a mini-boss shark swimming around it. It is not required to progress, but its body goes to the NPC by the grill, who then lights the fire. Without that, cooking on the island does not work.
Boss 4 — albatross (rocky island)
The strangest setup in the game. First you catch the tuna — the second mini-boss, taken on the professional boss lure. Then the tuna’s body has to be placed in the middle of the island, and a giant seagull comes down for it.
The albatross attacks from the air, so the sniper rifle is worse here than a fast-firing weapon. 54.5% of players reach this boss, the steepest drop on the whole completion curve. Patch 1.0.10 specifically fixed a bug that stopped the tuna and the albatross from respawning.
Boss 5 — the whale, and then the mutated whale
The final island is volcanic. An NPC in a hazmat suit asks for five creatures; hand them over and you get the fish bucket, the bait for the bowhead whale. The whale dies, but that is not the end: its body has to be hauled up the volcano and thrown into the crater. What rises out of it is the mutated form, the real final boss, which leaves pools of lava across the arena.
The whale was nerfed in patch 1.0.4 as well. 41.0% of players hold the fifth boss achievement, 39.7% the one for finishing the game, and 32.1% the fast boss kill. The rarest of the set is killing the final boss bare-handed: 3.3%. That is precisely the unlock that was repaired in patch 1.0.4.
Worth knowing before the run
- Boss bait is consumed. Lose the fight and you have to earn another one.
- The mini-bosses (shark, tuna) are tools rather than story: the shark switches on the grill, the tuna summons the albatross.
- Difficulty is adjustable: since patch 1.0.9, Easy gives creatures 25% less health and 50% less damage.
Frequently asked questions
How many bosses does How to Fish have?
Five. You can see it in the internal achievement identifiers — Boss1 through Boss5 in the [global Steam stats](https://steamcommunity.com/stats/4001890/achievements/). The last boss has two forms, and beyond them the game has two mini-bosses, the shark and the tuna, which exist for bait rather than for the story.
Can you run into a boss by accident?
No. Every boss is summoned with its own bait, and every bait has to be earned from an NPC or a quest. You cannot simply sail out and stumble across one.
How many players actually finish?
Per Steam stats on 31 August 2026, 91.5% of players killed the first boss, 41.0% killed the fifth, and 39.7% hold the achievement for finishing the game. Fewer than half the players reach the end.
Did the bosses get easier after launch?
Yes. Patch 1.0.4 nerfed the pufferfish and the whale, and patch 1.0.10 nerfed the anglerfish. These are official changes from the patch notes, not player impressions.
What is the bare-hands final boss achievement?
It is the rarest award in the game, held by 3.3% of players. Patch 1.0.4 specifically fixed a case where it failed to unlock.
