How to Fish has no anti-cheat. That is not a guess: the Steam page lists 14 features, and none of them is Valve Anti-Cheat, EAC or BattlEye. There is no anti-cheat entry at all.

What the game actually does against abuse

Measure Added What it gives you
Private lobbies patch 1.0.5, 22 August play with your own group only
Save file validation patch 1.0.6, 23 August stated as save validation
Autosave patch 1.0.6, 23 August a ruined session costs less
Connection diagnostics patch 1.0.9, 24 August you can see where the link breaks
Anti-cheat absent

The main tool against griefing here is not an anti-cheat but the private lobby. It arrived on the third day after release, in patch 1.0.5.

Why the risk grew on day two specifically

Patch 1.0.4 (21 August) raised co-op to 8 players. An open lobby became twice as crowded before there was any way to close it — private lobbies only landed the next day, in 1.0.5. Those two patches should be read together.

How many complaints about cheaters there really are

We ran the 100 most helpful English negative reviews through a keyword scan. This is how many reviews mention each theme:

Theme Mentions out of 100
Multiplayer and servers 37
Little content, boring 25
Bugs 23
Performance, FPS, crashes 18
Price 18
Cheats and toxicity 5
Controls and camera 3
Casino and RNG 3

Cheats and toxicity is the rarest of the eight measured complaints: 5 out of 100. For comparison, multiplayer and servers are complained about seven times more often. The network problem players actually have is connectivity, not cheaters.

This is a scan by words, not a reading of every review: the themes are not mutually exclusive, and one review can land in several rows.

Windows only, and no cross-play

The feature list has no Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and there is one platform: Windows. The player pool is therefore single, with no console or mobile lobbies. That narrows the surface for abuse without removing it.

Family Sharing is on the list, so the game can be shared inside a Steam family library.

What we are not claiming

The absence of an anti-cheat line on Steam does not prove the game has no server-side checks at all — it only proves that no anti-cheat system is declared. We also did not establish what exactly the 1.0.6 save validation validates: the patch note says save file validation, and we go no further than that.

We did not test any cheats ourselves and do not intend to: everything above is what the developer stated and what players wrote.

Frequently asked questions

Does How to Fish have anti-cheat?

No. The feature list on the Steam page contains no anti-cheat system — not VAC, not EAC, not BattlEye.

How do I protect a co-op session from griefing?

Create a private lobby. That option was added in patch 1.0.5 on 22 August.

Are there many complaints about cheaters?

Few. In the 100 most helpful English negative reviews, cheats and toxicity came up 5 times — the rarest of eight themes.

What did patch 1.0.6 change about saves?

The note states save file validation and autosave. The developer did not detail what exactly is validated.

How many players fit in a How to Fish lobby?

Up to eight — the limit was raised by patch 1.0.4 on 21 August.
