Armor & Damage Calculator
Build your armor set, enter the hit’s strength and type, and see how much health it takes and how many of those hits it takes to kill you.
How we calculate
Each armor point cuts up to 4 % of damage, capped at 80 % at 20 points. A strong hit, though, “punches through”: the game subtracts the damage divided by (2 + toughness/4) from your armor points, and only a floor of one fifth of your points keeps the protection from vanishing. That is why diamond and netherite behave differently with the same 20 points: netherite has 3 toughness per piece, not 2.
Next, Resistance removes 20 % per level, and protection enchantments add “protection points”: Protection gives 1 per level against any damage; Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection give 2 per level against their own type; Feather Falling gives 3 per level against falls. The total is capped at 20, i.e. at most another 80 %. Both steps are multipliers, so their order does not change the result.
Some damage ignores armor entirely: falling, burning, magic, drowning, suffocating in a block. The Warden’s sonic boom ignores enchantments too. This comes from the damage type tags in the 26.3 game data. Not included: the mace’s Breach enchantment, yellow absorption hearts, shields and world difficulty — enter the hit damage you actually see.

Questions and answers
Why do diamond and netherite both have 20 armor points but protect differently?
The difference is armor toughness: 2 per piece for diamond and 3 for netherite, 8 versus 12 in total. Against weak hits they are almost equal, but the stronger the hit, the more armor points it punches through, and toughness reduces that. Try a 20-damage hit in the calculator and the gap becomes visible.
Why doesn’t armor help against fall damage?
Falling is one of the damage types that ignore armor in the game. Only Feather Falling on boots (3 points per level) and regular Protection (1 per level) reduce it. The total never goes above 20 points, so the best you can get is minus 80 %.
Is Protection on every piece better than specialised enchantments?
Protection IV on four pieces gives 16 points against any damage. A specialised enchantment at IV gives 8 points, but only against its own type. For example, three Protection IV plus one Blast Protection IV is exactly 20 against explosions and 12 against everything else. Check your own case in the calculator: anything above 20 adds nothing.
Which game version are these numbers for?
Java Edition 26.3: armor points, toughness and enchantments are taken from that version’s own game data. The calculator does not cover Bedrock Edition, which uses different rules.
