Durability Calculator: Unbreaking and Mending
Pick an item and an Unbreaking level to see how many uses it survives on average and how much XP Mending needs to repair it.
How we calculate
Unbreaking does not add durability; it cancels part of the wear. For tools, weapons and elytra each point of wear is cancelled with a 1/2, 2/3 or 3/4 chance at levels I–III, so the item lasts on average two, three or four times longer. For armor the chance is lower: 20 %, 26.7 % and 30 %. Both formulas are written in the game’s own 26.3 data.
Mending restores 2 durability for every XP point from an orb you pick up. The calculator works out how many XP points you need to collect for a full repair and, for comparison, shows which level from zero that equals. Mending does not spend levels you already have.
The number of uses is an average: a particular item may break a bit earlier or later. One “use” is one point of wear: for a pickaxe that is usually one block, while armor can lose several points from a single strong hit.

Questions and answers
How much does Unbreaking III extend a pickaxe’s life?
Four times on average: three hits out of four don’t wear it. A diamond pickaxe with 1,561 durability lasts about 6,244 uses on average; a netherite one with 2,031 lasts about 8,124.
Why is Unbreaking weaker on armor?
That is how the game data defines it: for armor the chance to cancel wear is 20, 26.7 and 30 % at levels I–III, while for tools it is 50, 66.7 and 75 %. So a chestplate with Unbreaking III lasts only about 1.43 times longer.
How much XP does Mending need for a full repair?
Half of the missing durability in XP points: one point restores 2 durability. Repairing a diamond sword (1,561) from zero takes 781 XP points from orbs.
Which game version are these numbers for?
Java Edition 26.3: each item’s durability, the Unbreaking formulas and the Mending multiplier come from that version’s game data. The calculator does not cover Bedrock Edition.
