This piece is based on two official pages: Meet CS2, where Valve describes the concept of CS Rating and Premier itself, and the official news post Season 5, Armory, and More, which records the most recent confirmed change to the active map pool at the time of checking.

What Premier is

Premier is the official name for the competitive mode Valve describes as an “updated Active Duty Pick-Ban mode.” In other words, it’s not a mode built from scratch, but a reworked version of the classic competitive format, where teams take turns banning and picking maps from the active pool before a match.

Per the official description, Premier can be played either solo — with the system assembling a team — or with a pre-formed group. This lines up with the general logic of CS2 matchmaking, where group matchmaking factors in the standing of every member — more on how groups specifically affect opponent matching under the trust system in our piece on Trust Factor and matchmaking.

What CS Rating is

CS Rating is the central concept of this piece, and Valve’s official wording is worth staying close to without quoting it verbatim: it’s a metric that publicly demonstrates a player’s in-game performance and determines their position on the global and regional leaderboards. In other words, CS Rating does two jobs at once — a personal measure of form, and an entry ticket into the leaderboard tables.

The only officially confirmed way to earn or change CS Rating is by playing matches specifically in the updated Premier mode. This is stated directly on the Meet CS2 page as the condition for earning the rating, with no mention of any alternative path.

The active map pool for Premier

The rating isn’t calculated on arbitrary maps, but within the active duty map pool — the same set of maps that Valve regularly updates. The latest confirmed update: on 8 July 2026, the map Cache officially replaced Overpass in the active pool. That means the set of maps CS Rating is built on is a variable quantity, not something fixed once and for all.

We put together a full breakdown of how and on what basis Valve changes maps in the pool in a separate piece on CS2’s active map pool.

Rating as part of the broader mode system

Premier is just one of Valve’s named modes; alongside it exist Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Wingman, each with its own role. CS Rating is tied exclusively to Premier, and that’s precisely what sets it apart from the other formats.

What is officially NOT stated

This is one of the least detailed official corners of CS2’s systems, and it’s worth listing the gaps plainly:

  • A numerical CS Rating scale. There is no minimum or maximum value, and no description of intermediate thresholds or “ranks” within the scale.
  • The calculation formula. Exactly how wins, losses, or individual stats convert into a CS Rating change is not officially disclosed.
  • How often the rating updates. Whether CS Rating updates after every match, or whether there are seasonal resets, is not addressed on the pages we checked.
  • The mechanical difference between global and regional ranking. Both are named, but how regional standing relates to global standing is not explained.

All of these details evidently depend on internal system logic that Valve does not disclose on its official pages — much like the full list of Trust Factor signals in another system within the game.

How this connects to the rest of CS2

Active participation in Premier also means playing on a continually updated map set, within a matchmaking system built on Trust Factor rather than Prime status alone — the difference between these two systems is covered in our piece on Prime Status in CS2.

Frequently asked questions

What is CS Rating?

Per the official description on the Meet CS2 page, CS Rating is a visible measurement of a player's performance in Counter-Strike that determines their place on the global and regional leaderboards.

How do you earn CS Rating?

The only officially confirmed way is to play matches in the Premier mode, which Valve describes as an updated version of the Active Duty Pick-Ban competitive format. Other modes, including Competitive outside of Premier, do not affect CS Rating per the official description.

What is the scale of CS Rating — what's the range?

The official page does not publish specific bounds or intermediate thresholds for CS Rating. It states only that this is a measurable performance metric that determines leaderboard position — no range of numbers is given.

Can you play Premier with friends?

Yes, the official description directly states that Premier can be played either solo or in a group. It doesn't go into detail about how group play specifically affects an individual member's CS Rating.

Does the map list in Premier change?

Yes. For example, on 8 July 2026 the map Cache officially replaced Overpass in the active duty map pool that Premier uses — this is confirmed by the official Season 5 news post.
