Pudge Guide for Dota 2: Abilities and Stats

Contents
Pudge is a melee hero whose primary attribute is strength, with a complexity Valve rates as 2 out of 3. A hook that drags an enemy across half the map became a Dota 2 trademark long before new players started arriving — which is exactly why this hero shows up in almost every list of first recommendations for beginners.
Below is what Valve’s official data and the Liquipedia page actually say: stats, the ability list, and the spots where data is missing that we are honestly flagging rather than guessing.
Hero card: the raw numbers

What these numbers mean in practice
Strength is the primary attribute, and it shows in the base numbers. 25 strength at the start against 13 agility and 16 intelligence means that every level gives Pudge a faster gain in health pool and physical damage than the other two stats. In Dota 2 the primary attribute directly adds to a hero’s damage, so every level for Pudge is first and foremost a boost to durability, not accuracy or mana.
Intelligence is his lowest stat, so his mana pool is limited. 16 intelligence with a gain of only +1.8 per level means there is no endless resource for abilities — you have to pick your moment for the hook or Dismember rather than pressing buttons back to back.
An attack range of 175 means melee. To deal damage with a regular attack, Pudge has to close in on the target. That is the standard problem for every melee hero: a ranged opponent can hit him from a distance he cannot reach, which is exactly why Pudge’s main way of closing the gap is the hook, not his legs.
Armor of 2.1666667 and movement speed of 280 are base values straight from the feed. We deliberately do not say whether that is “high or low” relative to other heroes — Valve’s feed does not publish game-wide averages, and we are not going to invent a comparison.
Abilities: what the official list actually shows
Pudge has 5 abilities: 4 regular ones that level up, and 1 innate available from the start of the match. Here are their official names as listed on the hero page:
- Meat Hook
- Rot
- Meat Shield
- Flesh Heap — innate
- Dismember
One important caveat, and it is not here for show. Ability description text is Valve’s own material, and we do not copy it. Recounting the mechanics from memory is worse still: descriptions change with patches, and an outdated summary is more harmful than having none at all. So the detailed wording — how much it hits for, how long it lasts, what it does not affect — belongs in the client itself, by hovering the ability icon, or on the official hero page.
Numbers for the abilities that our source actually confirms:
- Meat Hook costs 120 mana at every level, its cooldown shrinks from 18 to 12 seconds as the level rises, and its cast range is 1300.
- Meat Shield costs from 65 to 80 mana, its cooldown falls from 20 to 17 seconds, and the damage it blocks rises from 8 to 26 over a duration of 4-7 seconds.
- Flesh Heap, the innate ability, grants Pudge +2 strength for every enemy hero kill or enemy hero death within a radius of 450 around Pudge. This is why Pudge keeps getting tankier simply because a fight is dragging on, whether or not he personally landed the kill.
- Dismember costs from 100 to 170 mana, its cooldown falls from 30 to 20 seconds, and its cast range is 200.
Liquipedia classifies Pudge’s role as: Disabler, Initiator, Durable, Nuker. That is a different kind of category than a lane or a map position — it describes what the hero does in a fight (disables, initiates, survives, deals area damage), not where to place him at the start of a match.
Talent tree
Pudge has 8 talents. Exactly how many of them you pick during a game, and at which levels, is a rule of Dota 2 itself, not a property of the hero.
What each talent actually does — again, check the client: talents get changed by patches more often than anything else, and any “verified list” from the internet goes stale fast. If you want to track changes systematically, keep the guide on updates and patches handy.
Where he’s strong, and where he’s exposed
We only state what follows from the numbers above.
| Angle | What the data shows |
|---|---|
| Scaling durability | the innate Flesh Heap gives +2 strength per hero kill or nearby death (radius 450) |
| Entry barrier | complexity 2 out of 3, the middle of three official marks |
| Range | 175, meaning melee — you have to close in manually or pull with the hook (range 1300) |
| Mana | intelligence 16 with +1.8 is the lowest of his three stats, so the resource pool is limited |
| Ability rhythm | Dismember costs from 100 to 170 mana with a cooldown from 30 to 20 seconds |
In plain terms: the hero rewards you for being in fights and surviving them, and punishes wasted mana on abilities that then take a long time to come back up.
Getting started if this is your first time playing him
- Learn the five positions first. Which lane you play and what you do there matters more than hero choice alone. Start with the guide on the five positions.
- Set yourself one goal per game: last hits. For a melee hero this is the basic skill everything else builds on: last hits and denies.
- Read the description of all 5 abilities in the client before your first match. Before, not after — otherwise you’ll spend half the game figuring out what a button does.
- Keep Meat Hook’s cost in mind. 120 mana and a cooldown of 18 down to 12 seconds are worth planning for, not pressing on reflex.
- Try him in a mode that forgives mistakes. See the overview of options in the guide on game modes.
If after a few matches you find melee combat is not for you, it is worth looking at other heroes, for example the list of heroes for beginners.
What we’re not claiming
⚠️ A few things you might expect from a “guide” are deliberately missing here:
- No item builds. We have no data on what works in the current patch, and a “classic item list” recited from memory is a guess, not a fact.
- No win rates or tier lists. There is no valid statistics in our source at all. Complexity 2 out of 3 is Valve’s own estimate of the entry barrier, and it says nothing about how strong the hero is.
- No official confirmation of “support” or “offlane” as a position. The community often describes Pudge as a support or offlane hero, but neither the official hero page nor Liquipedia publishes a separate lane or position tag for him — Liquipedia’s role tags (Disabler, Initiator, Durable, Nuker) describe combat behavior, not where to place him on the map.
- No ability mechanics beyond the numbers listed above. We know all 5 names and specific numbers for four of them. Everything else belongs in the game client.
If you ever see a “guide” with exact damage numbers and an “optimal build” that cites no patch, it is either a rehash of someone else’s patch notes or an invention.
In short
Pudge is a melee hero (range 175) with strength as his primary attribute and an official complexity of 2 out of 3. His innate Flesh Heap grants +2 strength per hero kill or nearby death within a radius of 450, and Meat Hook pulls enemies from a distance — a cast range of 1300 for 120 mana. The mechanics of his other abilities and his 8 talents belong in the game client — they change with patches, and any summary from memory turns stale fast.
