Do you need to play GTA 5 before GTA 6?
Contents
The short answer is no, you do not. GTA 6 is not a sequel to GTA 5, and you do not need to play the earlier games to understand it.
But the question does not come from nowhere — the series does contain callbacks. So here is the breakdown: what officially links GTA 6 to earlier games, who should still boot up GTA 5, and most importantly what to do about GTA Online, because that is where people waste the most effort.
What officially links GTA 6 to earlier games
Exactly one thing. Lucia’s official biography says her mother had dreamed of a better life since the days the family lived in Liberty City — the city from GTA III and GTA IV.
That is all of it. No returning characters, no mentions of Los Santos and no promised narrative continuity appear in any official material. What has actually been said about the plot is in our breakdown of the GTA 6 story.
The practical conclusion: finishing GTA 5 gives you no context you will need in GTA 6. New protagonists, new state, new story.
What Rockstar has not promised
To leave no room for wishful thinking, stated plainly:
- that characters from earlier games will return in GTA 6;
- that the events of GTA 6 continue the events of GTA 5;
- that there will be shared progress, unlocks or bonuses across the games;
- that knowing the earlier plots will give you anything in GTA 6.
None of those appear in official sources. If you read one of them stated as fact, it did not come from Rockstar.
Who should still boot up GTA 5
There is one scenario where it genuinely makes sense, and it has nothing to do with the plot.
If you have never played a big GTA, start GTA 5 to find out whether the format suits you. The open world, the controls, the mission pacing, the camera, the shooting — all of it will be executed differently in GTA 6, but it will be similar in kind. Finding that out before paying full price for a new game is cheaper than finding out after.
If you played GTA 5 years ago and no longer remember the story, there is nothing to replay. This is not an exam.
How GTA 6 differs from GTA 5 on specific parameters is covered separately in GTA 6 vs GTA 5.
What to do about GTA Online
This is the important part, and the one with the most confusion around it.
GTA 6 is a single-player game at launch. There is no online mode: Rockstar calls it a single-player experience and the PlayStation Store card labels it the same way. The detail is in our guide to GTA 6 online.
The direct consequence: carrying progress over from GTA Online leads nowhere, because there is nowhere to carry it to. There are no official statements about transferring money, vehicles or characters at all.
⚠️ So it is not worth:
- stockpiling anything in GTA Online “so it carries over”;
- buying a Shark Card for a future game;
- trusting videos along the lines of “how to prepare your account for GTA 6” — no official preparation process exists.
If you play GTA Online and enjoy it, keep playing. Just do it for the game itself, not as an investment in GTA 6.
If you are buying GTA 5 anyway
One detail that trips people up in stores: GTA 5 is sold as two separate versions — Legacy and Enhanced. Their official requirements differ even on storage: according to the game’s own listings, Legacy asks for 125 GB of disk space and Enhanced for 105 GB.
⚠️ To be straight with you: we have not done a full comparison of the two versions — that is a subject for its own article, not a paragraph. What matters here is different: these really are two distinct products, and buying the wrong one is entirely possible if you do not check the name.
What is actually worth doing before launch
Instead of replaying the older games, three things that genuinely save time:
- Free up disk space. The exact size of GTA 6 has not been announced, but going by Rockstar’s previous releases you should plan for at least 150 GB — the working is in our piece on the GTA 6 file size.
- Sort out your pre-order before 19 November if you want the bonuses — step by step in our guide to pre-ordering GTA 6.
- Buy nothing on the strength of leaks. Not keys “from another region”, not access “before everyone else” — early access to GTA 6 does not exist.
The short version
- Playing GTA 5 before GTA 6 is not necessary — the stories are not connected.
- The only official reference to earlier games is Liberty City in Lucia’s mother’s backstory.
- GTA 5 is worth starting only to find out whether the format suits you.
- GTA Online progress carries over nowhere — GTA 6 is single-player at launch.
- There are two versions of GTA 5 in stores — Legacy and Enhanced, and they are different products.
- Better preparation: disk space, the pre-order, and scepticism about leaks.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to play GTA 5 to understand GTA 6?
No. GTA 6 has new protagonists, a new state and its own story. The only official reference to earlier games is Liberty City in Lucia's mother's backstory, and it explains nothing about the plot.
Is GTA 6 a sequel to GTA 5?
Rockstar never calls GTA 6 a sequel. The game has new protagonists, it is set in a different state, and no narrative continuity with GTA 5 has been promised officially.
Will GTA Online progress carry over to GTA 6?
There is not a single official word about it. GTA 6 is a single-player game at launch with no online mode, so there is nowhere for progress to carry to. Any promise of a transfer right now is not from Rockstar.
Is it worth buying GTA 5 now?
As preparation for GTA 6, no. As a way to find out whether the big-GTA format suits you before paying full price for a new game, it makes perfect sense.
What is the difference between GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced?
They are two separate products in the store. Their official requirements differ even on storage: Legacy asks for 125 GB, Enhanced for 105 GB. We have not done a full comparison of the two versions.
What should you actually do before GTA 6 launches?
More useful than replaying GTA 5: free up disk space, sort out your pre-order, and buy nothing on the strength of story leaks. That genuinely saves time and money.
