How we calculate

The game fills a chest the moment it is first opened, using the structure’s loot table. A table is made of several pools. Each pool makes a number of rolls — fixed, or random within a range such as 4 to 8 — and every roll picks one entry in proportion to its weight. Empty entries have weight too; they simply add nothing. Pools are rolled independently of each other.

For the chosen item the calculator works it out exactly, with no simulation. The chance q that a single roll gives the item is its weight divided by the pool’s total weight. The chance a pool gives none is (1 − q) raised to the number of rolls, averaged over every possible roll count. The chance of at least one in a chest is one minus the product of those values across all pools. The average amount is average rolls × q × average stack size. Over N chests the chance is 1 − (1 − p)ᴺ, and it takes 1/p chests on average to find the first one.

Trial Chamber vaults roll nested tables, and one of their pools only fires with a set probability — the calculator accounts for both; one “chest” for a vault means one opening with a key. A mineshaft in the Sulfur Caves biome adds a music disc, so it has its own option. Maps (marked with *) are dropped when the game cannot find their target, so their chance is an upper bound. Enchanted items and books are shown without specific enchantments.

Questions and answers

Where is the best chance of an Enchanted Golden Apple?

Among regular chests, in an Ancient City: about 8.6% per chest. Next come the Bastion treasure room (5.3%) and the Woodland Mansion (3.7%), while a Ruined Portal gives only 1.5%. An Ominous Vault in Trial Chambers gives 22.5% per opening.

Why is the “average” number of chests higher than for a 50% chance?

They measure different things. For an Enchanted Golden Apple in Ruined Portals you need about 67 chests on average, yet 46 chests already give better than a 50% chance. Some players get lucky early, others have to open 150 — those long streaks pull the average up.

Does Luck affect chest loot?

No. Luck only changes loot through bonus rolls and entry “quality”, and the Java 26.3 chest tables have neither. Weapon enchantments don’t affect chest contents either.

Why do maps have an asterisk?

A map from a chest points to the nearest structure of its kind. If the game can’t find one, in 26.3 the map simply vanishes from the chest, so the true chance can be slightly lower than shown.

Which version are these odds for?

Java Edition 26.3, taken from that version’s vanilla loot tables. Bedrock Edition uses different tables, so its numbers may differ.
