How we calculate

The mob cap is counted per world, not per player: the base number is multiplied by the active chunk count and divided by 289 — the area of the 17×17 chunk square around a single player. Chunks shared by several players count once, so a second player standing next to you barely raises the cap.

Distance splits the space into bands. Closer than 24 blocks nothing spawns at all. Beyond 32 blocks mobs may despawn at random, and past the instant-despawn line they vanish immediately. That line differs by edition: 128 blocks in Java, 44 in Bedrock at simulation distance 4 and 128 at 6 or above.

Light is checked separately for hostile and passive mobs. In Java a hostile mob needs zero block light, while sky light is compared against a random number — which is why spawning is unreliable at dusk, and why the calculator says "sometimes" rather than yes or no. Passive mobs simply need a high enough level.

Questions and answers

Why does my farm stall when I stand right next to it?

Nothing spawns within 24 blocks. Your waiting spot has to sit past that line but inside the instant-despawn distance.

Will a second player nearby raise the cap?

Barely. The cap follows the active chunk count, and chunks shared by two players count once — spread the players out if you want a higher cap.

Why does the calculator say "sometimes" instead of yes?

For hostile mobs in Java, sky light is compared against a random number from 0 to 7. Some levels spawn mobs only part of the time — that is the game, not uncertainty in the maths.

Why is the cap a fraction?

The formula divides by 289 and rarely lands on a whole number. The source does not describe how the game rounds it, so both values are shown rather than an invented rule.
