Slime Chunk Finder

Enter the world seed and your coordinates to see a grid of the surrounding chunks with slime chunks highlighted, plus a list of the nearest ones.

Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition places slime chunks differently.

A number or text, exactly as typed when creating the world. The /seed command shows the numeric seed.

How we calculate

In Java Edition roughly one chunk in ten is a slime chunk. Which ones depends only on the world seed and the chunk coordinates: the game mixes them with a fixed formula and runs Java’s standard random number generator; if it returns 0 out of ten possible values, the chunk is a slime chunk. This tool reproduces the formula bit for bit, so the result matches the game for any seed.

A chunk is a 16 × 16 block square. The chunk number is the block coordinate divided by 16 and rounded down, so block X = −1 is already in chunk −1, not 0. A text seed is turned into a number the same way the game does it: surrounding spaces are trimmed, the text is read as a whole number if possible, and otherwise the string hash is used. Distances in the list are measured from your point to the chunk centre.

Slimes spawn in slime chunks below Y 40 at any light level, which is why farms are usually built deep underground. Bedrock Edition decides slime chunks differently, and this tool does not apply to it.

Questions and answers

Why don’t slimes spawn in my slime chunk?

Check the height: in slime chunks they only spawn below Y 40. Light level does not matter. Also make sure the world is Java Edition and the seed is entered exactly, including capitalisation.

Does this work for Bedrock Edition?

No. Bedrock uses a different algorithm for slime chunks, so this tool’s results would be wrong there. The page covers Java Edition only.

My seed is a word. What should I enter?

Enter the same word you used when creating the world, with the same capitalisation: “Glacier” and “glacier” are different worlds. Copying the number shown by the /seed command is the safest option.

How do I see chunk borders in the game?

In Java Edition press F3 + G and the game draws chunk borders. This tool gives the borders in blocks for any chunk.
