Weapon Damage & DPS Calculator
Pick a weapon, an enchantment and a target to see normal and critical hit damage, the cooldown, damage per second and how many hits it takes to beat a target in armor.
How we calculate
Weapon damage is the player’s bare-hand 1 plus the item’s modifier, and attack speed is the base 4 plus a negative modifier. Both modifiers come straight from the 26.3 game data. A full-strength hit is available once every 1 / speed seconds: 0.625 s for a sword, 1 s for a netherite axe. DPS here means normal hits, each one landed with a fully recharged bar.
Strength adds 3 damage per level. A critical hit (while falling after a jump, not while sprinting) multiplies the weapon damage including Strength by 1.5, and the enchantment bonus is added after that multiplier. Sharpness gives 1 plus 0.5 for each level above the first and works on everything; Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Impaling give 2.5 per level, but only against their own mob groups from the game’s tags. The target’s armor is handled by the same formula as in the armor calculator.
Not included: spears (they have a separate charged attack), the mace’s falling smash together with Density and Breach — the mace only counts as a normal hit here; thrown tridents, Sweeping Edge, hits on a partly charged bar, and Bedrock Edition. The crit, Strength and cooldown rules are not in the game data — they were checked against minecraft.wiki and an independent calculator.

Questions and answers
Which is better in a fight, a sword or an axe?
The axe hits harder once: a netherite axe deals 10, a netherite sword 8. But the sword is ready again after 0.625 s while the axe needs at least 1 s, so per second the sword deals more: 12.8 against 10 without enchantments. The axe, on the other hand, disables the opponent’s shield for 5 seconds — that is in the game data too.
Does a critical hit multiply Sharpness?
No. In Java Edition the 1.5 multiplier applies to the weapon damage together with Strength, and the enchantment bonus is simply added afterwards. Example: netherite sword, Strength II and Sharpness V — (8 + 6) × 1.5 + 3 = 24.
Which mobs count as undead for Smite?
A tag in the game data decides it: every skeleton (including the wither skeleton and the bogged), every zombie (drowned, husk, zombified piglin, zoglin and more), plus the Wither and the phantom. The calculator lists all of them under the Target field. Against them Smite V adds 12.5 damage — more than four times what Sharpness V gives.
Why can’t I put Sharpness on a trident?
According to the game data, Sharpness only goes on swords, spears and axes, while Smite and Bane of Arthropods also go on the mace. From this set the trident only gets Impaling, which in Java Edition works on aquatic mobs only.
Which game version are these numbers for?
Java Edition 26.3: every weapon’s damage and speed and the enchantment bonuses come from that version’s own game data. Bedrock Edition is not covered — critical hits and Strength work differently there.
