Red Dead Online is a separate multiplayer mode built into Red Dead Redemption 2, and Rockstar maintains an official Getting Started page for it that walks a newcomer through their first steps. Below is that guide retold in our own words, without adding details beyond what it actually says.

The first few minutes: Sisika Penitentiary

A character’s journey officially begins near Sisika Penitentiary. From there, the newcomer sets off, and within the first few minutes receives a horse, pitches a first camp, and starts hunting for treasure. This isn’t the story campaign — it’s a self-contained entry line specifically for the online mode, separate from the single-player stories of Arthur Morgan or John Marston.

Creating a character

Before even appearing in the world, a player goes through the Character Creator, where they can set:

  • Name and age of the character.
  • Skin tone and weight.
  • Facial features — a set of appearance parameters.
  • Whistle style, used to call the character’s horse.
  • Base attributes the character starts with.

The official description does not detail every individual editor slider — it only lists these categories as available for customization.

Health, stamina, and the horse

A character’s condition is officially shown through two bars in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Each of them has an outer reserve bar and an inner Core that determines how fast it recovers. Food replenishes the health Core specifically — that’s stated directly in the guide.

The horse in this system isn’t just transportation. Rockstar’s recommendation is to get Horse Insurance: with it, a horse automatically recovers over time even after being critically wounded, rather than being lost for good. For anyone who wants to go deeper into breeds and horse care, there’s a separate piece on horses in RDR2.

Eagle Eye, Dead Eye, and the combat system

The beginner’s guide mentions the Dead Eye targeting system and the heightened-awareness Eagle Eye mode as part of the basic toolkit every player runs into from the first few hours. Together with the weapon wheel, this forms the core survival and hunting toolset in the open world — more on hunting in our piece on pelt quality and hunting.

Playing together: Free Roam and the Posse

Red Dead Online is officially built around playing together in the open world — Free Roam missions and a group of players called a Posse, which you can form yourself or join. It’s a formal social layer on top of exploring the map and completing tasks.

What is officially NOT listed on this page

The Getting Started guide deliberately skips over the finer details:

  • No specific economy numbers — how much it costs to get started, or how long it takes to reach the first roles.
  • No step-by-step task sequence after arriving near Sisika Penitentiary — just a list of what a player receives at the start.
  • No description of specific Specialist Roles — those are officially described on a separate page, covered in our piece on earning money in Red Dead Online.

This is general orientation for a newcomer, not a step-by-step walkthrough — and Rockstar’s own page is built exactly that way.

Frequently asked questions

Where does a character start out in Red Dead Online?

The journey officially begins near Sisika Penitentiary, from which a new character sets off — receiving a horse, pitching a first camp, and starting a treasure hunt. That's the starting point documented on Rockstar's official page.

What can you customize in the Red Dead Online character editor?

Name, age, skin tone, weight, facial features, whistle style for calling your horse, and base attributes. That's exactly what Rockstar officially lists as configurable in the Character Creator, without breaking down every individual slider.

How does character health work in the game?

Health and stamina are shown as two bars in the bottom-left corner of the screen. The outer bar is the overall reserve, and the inner Core determines how quickly that reserve refills; food specifically replenishes the health Core.

What is Horse Insurance for?

Horse Insurance is officially described as a way to make your horse automatically recover over time even after being critically wounded. Without it, losing a horse in a fight can be permanent.

What is a Posse in Red Dead Online?

It's a group of players you can form or join for shared missions and activities in Red Dead Online. The official guide mentions the Posse simply as a tool for playing together with others, without restricting it to any particular activity type.
