Your first raid in ARC Raiders: exits and extraction explained
Contents
The core mechanic of ARC Raiders isn’t clearing a level — it’s managed risk: go to the surface, gather loot, and make it back alive. Here’s how that loop works, based on the official description on arcraiders.com and Embark Studios’ patch notes.
The point of a raid
A raider leaves Speranza for one of the surface maps (more on the maps themselves in our piece on maps and locations). The goal is to gather resources, weapons, and ARC machine parts, then reach the extraction point.
- Two ways a raid can end. The official description contrasts two scenarios: the raider comes back with a full pack of loot, or goes down on the surface and comes back empty-handed. There’s no third outcome described in the official text.
- Who’s in your way. Two categories of threat exist on the surface at once: mechanized ARC machines and other player-raiders who came up for the exact same loot. There’s a separate piece on the machine types, in our guide to ARC machines.
- Preparation matters more than reflexes. What a raider brings into a raid — weapons, medkits, gadgets — is officially described on the same page as part of the same integrated loop of prep and extraction.
What you lose on a failed raid
The basic rule is simple: loot gathered during the raid, plus part of the gear a raider brought in, is lost if they don’t extract. That’s exactly what creates the tension at the heart of the game’s loop — push for more loot, or extract earlier with a smaller but guaranteed result.
- The Safe Pocket exception. Embark Studios’ patch notes (version 1.19.0) confirm the Safe Pocket mechanic — a slot whose contents survive even after a raider’s death, provided they have a specific Augment (Safekeeper) equipped. It’s the only officially confirmed way to guarantee you keep at least something after a failed raid.
- Everything else in your inventory is at risk by default, with no additional caveats in the official materials.
Solo or in a squad
A raid can be run alone or with a team of up to three players. Patch 1.13.0 added a dedicated option for solo players:
- Who gets the toggle. Players level 40 and above see a dedicated Solo vs Squad option above matchmaking — it affects who they’re matched against.
- XP bonus. Solo players who use this toggle get a +20% XP bonus — applied to both a successful extraction and a failed raid, per the same patch notes.
More on squad play, team size, and cross-platform support is covered in our dedicated co-op piece.
What is officially NOT said
- The exact length of a single raid (in minutes) isn’t given in the official materials we checked — it most likely depends on the map and player behavior, but Embark hasn’t published concrete figures.
- The exact odds of running into other raiders on any given map aren’t disclosed officially.
- Penalties for repeated failed raids (beyond losing your loot) aren’t described in official sources — there’s no confirmed information about additional consequences.
- Whether there’s any way to recover lost loot after a failed raid, other than what’s in Safe Pocket, isn’t officially confirmed.
What this means in practice
The main takeaway from official materials: preparation and caution matter more than rushing through. That lines up with the game’s overall description as a PvPvE extraction shooter rather than a fast-paced arcade shooter. What to actually bring to lower your risk is covered in our piece on gear and loot.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if a raider dies during a raid?
The official description is direct: if a raider goes down on the surface, they come back with no loot. The exception is whatever is in the Safe Pocket slot, if the raider has the matching Augment installed — that stays with them even after death.
What is Safe Pocket?
A mechanic confirmed in Embark Studios' patch notes: a slot whose contents a player keeps even after dying in a raid, provided the Safekeeper Augment is equipped.
Can you go on a raid alone?
Yes. As of patch 1.13.0, solo players at level 40 and above get a dedicated Solo vs Squad toggle above matchmaking, plus a +20% XP bonus for both a successful extraction and a failed raid.
Who do you run into on the surface?
Two kinds of threats at once: mechanized ARC machines and other living raiders competing for the same loot. There's a separate piece on the ARC machines specifically.
