Between console families: PS4/Xbox One → PS5/Xbox Series X|S

The key thing to know about this scenario is that cross-family transfers are officially supported.

  • Rockstar’s own example is PlayStation 4 → Xbox Series X|S. This isn’t limited to moving within one manufacturer’s lineup (PS4→PS5, Xbox One→Xbox Series X|S) — it also covers moving between PlayStation and Xbox.
  • The conditions and limits of this process mostly concern exactly what transfers, not whether the move itself is allowed.

What actually transfers: the GTA$ distinction

This is where the key limitation to understand up front comes in.

  • GTA$ earned in-game transfers regardless of console family — it moves with the character in any of the transfer scenarios described here.
  • GTA$ purchased with real money transfers only within the same family: from PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. When moving between families (PlayStation ↔ Xbox), it doesn’t transfer.

This distinction matters most for anyone who’s bought Shark Cards: the character itself and earned progress will follow you to the new platform, but purchased GTA$ only comes along if the move stays within the same console manufacturer.

Console ↔ PC: not supported

Unlike moves between console generations, transferring progress between console and PC isn’t officially supported in either direction — not from console to PC, and not the other way. This is a separate, fully isolated category of platforms in Rockstar’s system.

Within PC: GTAV Legacy → GTAV Enhanced

The third scenario applies only to PC owners, where two parallel versions exist.

  • The transfer only works in one direction — from Legacy into Enhanced.
  • The procedure is one-time. After the transfer, progress no longer syncs between the two versions: further changes in one version won’t appear in the other.
