Test builds of Bedrock Edition finally moved the party system (a group of friends) out of beta status and into a fully working feature this summer — and it happened not in one step, but across three separate builds, each responsible for its own piece of the puzzle.

When party actually showed up

It is easy to assume a major feature lands in a single update, but party rolled out in stages. Here is how it looked build by build.

Build Date What changed for party
Stable release 26.20 May 5, 2026 The feature itself arrived: creating a group, joining it, automatically following the leader
Preview 26.30.28 May 12, 2026 The /party chat command was added, but it did not work yet
Preview 26.50.25 August 11, 2026 Party is not mentioned at all — the build covered other things (Abandoned Camp, Cushion, Straw Bed)
Preview 26.50.26 August 16-18, 2026 The /party command started working, party-chat appeared, and the Beta tag was removed

Party itself is a group of friends in which the leader takes the rest along: whenever the leader joins a world with cross-play turned on, the other members automatically join too, without typing in a server address by hand every time. The maximum size of such a group is fifteen members, and joining after the toast notification happens within five seconds, provided the player does not decline the invite in time.

The /party command: from added-but-dead to working

Back in the May test build Preview 26.30.28, the /party command itself was added to chat — but according to the official description, it did not actually work at that point. It took another three months, in the Preview 26.50.26 build, for the /party command to finally start working: players can now send messages straight into their party’s chat, and those party-chat messages show up in the regular in-game chat with their own color highlight. That same build also removed the Beta tag next to party in the group interface — meaning developers considered the feature stable enough for regular status rather than an experimental one.

This staged approach is a fairly typical Mojang practice for large social features: first the mechanic itself ships in a stable release, then a test Preview build adds a chat command to control it, and only a few builds later is that command actually made to work and the experimental tag dropped. For players, that means a command name showing up in a changelog does not guarantee it does anything yet — it is worth checking the actual status rather than just the mention.

What we are not claiming

A common mistake is crediting build 26.50.25 with adding the command for creating a party. That is not the case: according to the official changelog for build 26.50.25, there is not a single line about party in it at all — it is entirely about other things: fixes to the Abandoned Camp structure, a bug with the Cushion, renaming Explorer Maps, the Straw Bed block, plus graphics, mobs, sounds, stability, and the Script API. The party system itself arrived back in the stable release 26.20, the /party command in Preview 26.30.28, and its working version along with the removed Beta tag came only with the next build, 26.50.26. We are also not claiming these changes have already reached the stable release outside the Preview channel — as of the 26.50.26 release, this is still a test branch.

What this means for test-channel players

For anyone currently on the Preview channel, the difference is immediately noticeable: trying the /party command in a group’s chat only works on build 26.50.26 and newer, while on 26.50.25 the command is technically present in chat but produces no result at all. If you play in a group and use party for traveling together on a Realms server, it is worth switching specifically to 26.50.26 to get a working group chat. For a full rundown of how a Realms server differs from a local world for friends and what it costs, see our guide to Realms servers.

A practical tip: if your goal is specifically to test the group chat, check the build tag in the game settings before drawing conclusions about whether the feature works, rather than relying on the command name alone appearing in a changelog. For everyday play on the stable release, none of this matters yet — the /party command and the colored group chat currently live only on the Preview channel.

More broadly, the pattern behind these test builds — separate Preview builds numbered like 26.50.x released ahead of every stable update — is covered in more depth in our guide to Minecraft snapshots. And the difference between Bedrock Edition itself and Java Edition, which does not have a party system in this form, is explained in our guide to Java versus Bedrock Edition.

This party story is not the only change the Preview channel brought this summer: we covered the technical and gameplay tweaks of the previous build in our news on the earlier Bedrock Preview, which dealt with Explorer Maps and the structure file format.

In short

Party in Minecraft Bedrock arrived in three steps: the feature itself launched in the stable release 26.20, the /party command appeared in Preview 26.30.28 but did not work at first, build 26.50.25 did not touch party at all, and then 26.50.26 finally made the command work, added colored party-chat, and removed the Beta tag. A party holds no more than fifteen members, and joining the leader happens within five seconds of the notification.

Frequently asked questions

When did the ability to create a party in Bedrock Edition actually appear?

In the stable release 26.20, which shipped on May 5, 2026 — it added creating and joining a group along with automatically following the leader.

Does that mean build 26.50.25 added a command for creating a party?

No. According to the official changelog for the Preview 26.50.25 build from August 11, 2026, party is not mentioned there at all — that build covered other things entirely.

How many players can a party hold?

No more than fifteen members at once.

How much time do players have to join after the notification?

Members get a toast notification and join the leader's world within five seconds unless they decline the invite.

When did the /party command actually start working?

In the Preview 26.50.26 build, released August 16, 2026 for iOS and iPadOS and August 18, 2026 for the remaining platforms; that same build removed the Beta tag from party.

Is this already available in the stable release outside the Preview channel?

The working /party command and the removal of the Beta tag arrived in a Preview test build; whether this reaches the stable release unchanged is not yet clarified.
