Redstone Delay Calculator

Enter the delay you need in seconds and the calculator picks the repeaters. Or build a chain and see how long it delays the signal.

How we calculate

Redstone measures time in redstone ticks: one is two game ticks, or 0.1 seconds. A repeater can be set to 1, 2, 3 or 4 redstone ticks, which is 0.1–0.4 seconds. A comparator, an observer and a redstone torch each add one redstone tick.

For longer delays, repeaters go in a chain: the calculator uses as few as possible, setting all of them to the maximum and the last one to the remainder. A delay that is not a multiple of 0.1 seconds is rounded up, because redstone has no shorter step.

These are ideal delays with no lag: if the server cannot keep up with 20 game ticks per second, the real delay will be longer.

Questions and answers

How many repeaters for 1 second?

Three: 1 second is 10 redstone ticks and one repeater gives up to 4. Set two to 4 and one to 2.

What is a redstone tick?

The unit of time for redstone: two game ticks, or 0.1 seconds. The game runs 20 game ticks per second, so 10 redstone ticks pass each second.

Why does my contraption take longer?

The calculator shows the ideal delay. If the server lags, game ticks stretch out in time and the whole circuit runs slower.

Which version are these numbers for?

Java Edition, which the sources were checked against. These numbers were not verified for Bedrock Edition.
