Rockstar does not require an SSD for RDR 2: both the minimum and the recommended tier ask for 150 GB on any drive. Both tiers require 64-bit Windows 10.

The requirements in the table are Rockstar’s official system requirements. The “class” of a graphics card or processor is our hardware class scale 0-5: a GameMapa editorial rating, not a benchmark. Specifications (memory, cores, year) come from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel pages; TechPowerUp and PassMark were not used.

How we calculate

The requirements come from Rockstar’s official support page on Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements (the page says last updated 30 April 2024; we opened it on 18 August 2026). System and video memory, free space and Windows are compared with Rockstar’s numbers directly.

Graphics cards and processors cannot be compared directly, so each model in the requirements — GTX 770, R9 280, GTX 1060, RX 480, Core i5-2500K, FX-6300, Core i7-4770K, Ryzen 5 1500X — is looked up in our hardware database by exact name, and its class becomes the threshold. A graphics card meets the minimum if its class is not below that of the GTX 770 or R9 280, and the recommended tier if it is not below that of the GTX 1060 or RX 480.

The processor is checked the same way: the minimum is the Core i5-2500K / FX-6300 class, the recommended tier is the Core i7-4770K / Ryzen 5 1500X class. The RDR 2 minimum processors are the weakest in our list, so any processor from the list meets at least the minimum. The overall verdict is the worst of the components, not the average; if something is not chosen, the page says separately what was left unchecked.

Questions and answers

What are the official minimum requirements of Red Dead Redemption 2?

According to Rockstar’s support page: 64-bit Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 770 2 GB or AMD R9 280 3 GB, and 150 GB of space. Recommended: Core i7-4770K or Ryzen 5 1500X, 12 GB of RAM, GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 480 4 GB.

How is the processor checked?

All four processors in the RDR 2 requirements — Core i5-2500K and FX-6300 at the minimum, Core i7-4770K and Ryzen 5 1500X at the recommended tier — are in our hardware database with specs from Intel and AMD pages. A processor of the i7-4770K / Ryzen 5 1500X class or above counts as recommended, a lower one as minimum. The class is our editorial rating, not a benchmark.

Can a GTX 1650 run Red Dead Redemption 2?

On our scale, at the minimum requirements: it is class 1, like the minimum GTX 770 and R9 280, but below the class 2 of the recommended GTX 1060. It has 4 GB of video memory — the level of Rockstar’s recommended requirements. The class is our assessment, not Rockstar’s words.

Does RDR 2 need an SSD?

No. Both the minimum and the recommended requirements list 150 GB on an HDD, so a hard drive passes as long as it has that much free space.

What does the “class” of a graphics card or processor mean?

It is our editorial 0-5 scale, not a benchmark. The GTX 770 and R9 280 are class 1 on it, the GTX 1060 and RX 480 class 2. Among processors, the Core i5-2500K and FX-6300 are class 0, the Core i7-4770K and Ryzen 5 1500X class 1. A card Rockstar does not name but which is class 2 or higher counts as recommended — that is our assessment, not Rockstar’s words.
