An avatar’s appearance and how to shop for clothing are described in two official Roblox support articles — one on the avatar editor, one on the Marketplace. Below is a summary of both sources in our own words.

Where to Edit Your Avatar

The avatar editor opens through the Avatar section of Roblox’s site navigation menu. Items there are added by category — hats, hair, faces, clothing, and other accessories.

How Many Items You Can Wear

Every category has a soft limit — for example, you can usually wear three hats at once. To wear more:

  • Turn on Advanced mode.
  • Add an item by its Asset ID from a link to it.
  • Keep the upper limit in mind — no more than 10 items per category, even in Advanced mode.

Skin Tone and Individual Body Parts

An avatar’s skin tone is changed in the Head & Body → Skin Tone section. If you need different colors on different body parts, that’s also done through Advanced mode, not the main quick editor.

Where to Buy Clothes and Items

Clothes and items for an avatar are bought in the Marketplace. Search there works with a few filters:

  • Keywords.
  • Item category.
  • Sale type.
  • Creator.
  • Price.

Marketplace items are paid for in Robux. We covered legal ways to get Robux in our piece on Robux and how to get it. If you have a Roblox Plus subscription, a discount on some Marketplace items applies automatically — more on that in our piece on Roblox Premium and Plus.

If Your Avatar Displays Incorrectly

After changing items, an avatar sometimes displays with old elements or visual artifacts. There’s one official piece of advice for that: click the Redraw link beneath the avatar image — it forces a re-render.

What Isn’t Officially Stated

  • Whether the 10-item-per-category limit can be fully bypassed. The checked pages state plainly that it’s an upper limit, with no exceptions.
  • Average clothing prices on the Marketplace. Prices are set by the item creators themselves, and official support doesn’t provide a single price list.
  • Moderation timelines for new creator items. Nothing on the checked avatar and Marketplace pages addresses this.
  • Whether a Marketplace purchase can be fully refunded. The checked pages describe searching and buying, but don’t touch on refunds or cancelling a completed purchase.

Basic and Advanced Mode: When You Need Which

For most people, the basic editor is enough: pick a category, browse available items, and click to wear them. Advanced mode is only needed for two cases the support pages name directly — adding an item by a specific Asset ID, or exceeding the standard soft limit on items per category. For a routine avatar refresh, switching to that mode isn’t necessary.

Overall, the avatar editor is a tool with no hidden paid steps: everything that happens in it is either free appearance customization or buying a specific item with Robux in the Marketplace.

Frequently asked questions

How many hats can you wear on an avatar at once?

Usually three — that's the standard soft limit per category. Through Advanced mode and adding items by Asset ID, you can wear more, but never more than 10 items in a category.

Where do you change an avatar's skin tone?

In the Head & Body → Skin Tone section of the main avatar editor. For different colors on individual body parts, you need Advanced mode.

Where do you officially buy clothes for an avatar?

In the Marketplace — Roblox's built-in store, searchable by keyword, category, sale type, creator, and price.

What should you do if your avatar displays with artifacts after changing clothes?

Click the Redraw link beneath the avatar image — that's the official advice for forcing a re-render.

What do you use to buy Marketplace items?

Robux — Roblox's in-platform currency. We covered legal ways to get Robux in a separate piece.
