Grassrivers in GTA 6: What's Officially Known About Leonida's Swamp
Contents
Grassrivers is Leonida’s swamp region, and here’s the most important thing Rockstar has said about it: alligators aren’t the scariest thing there. They’re called the area’s most famous draw, but not its most dangerous — in Rockstar’s own words, far more dangerous predators and stranger discoveries lurk among the mangroves.
A note on scope before we go further, so there’s no confusion. Rockstar hasn’t published an official map of Leonida. And everything below is essentially the entire body of officially confirmed information about Grassrivers as of 28 August 2026. Rockstar hasn’t named the region’s size, listed districts within it, or confirmed any missions, characters, or gameplay mechanics tied to it.
What Rockstar says about the region itself
The description of Grassrivers lives on the Only in Leonida page of the official rockstargames.com site. In plain terms, it comes down to three points:
- it’s an untouched, primeval space;
- you never know what’s lurking beneath its surface;
- alligators are the most famous thing associated with the place, but not the most dangerous thing living there.
That third point deserves its own emphasis. This isn’t press interpretation or a guess — Rockstar states directly that far more dangerous predators and stranger discoveries exist among the Grassrivers mangroves than alligators. The company doesn’t specify what those are.
In other words, the line was left open deliberately. If you come across a claim describing exactly which “predators” are hiding in those mangroves, that’s someone’s addition — it isn’t in the official text.
Two official shots
Beyond the description, Rockstar has shown Grassrivers in official images. They’re worth breaking down literally, since this is a rare case where you can describe what’s actually visible rather than relay someone else’s impressions.
The speedboat shot. A speedboat cuts across the water towards buildings on stilts standing directly above it. On the horizon of that same shot, the Vice City skyline is visible. So the city can be seen from the swamp — and that’s as far as the shot goes. Rockstar hasn’t given any distances, travel times, or boundaries between regions.
The airboat shot. Three mud-caked people ride an airboat. With them: a dead alligator and a wild cat. One has an automatic weapon resting by his feet; another is holding a rifle.
Who these people are, whether they’re playable characters, or whether they connect to any storyline — Rockstar hasn’t explained. The shot shows a scene, not a story. But paired with the text description, it sets the tone for the place: hunting, weapons, prey, and swamp — not a sightseeing trip.
Grassrivers among Leonida’s six destinations
Grassrivers doesn’t stand alone — on the Only in Leonida page, Rockstar lists exactly six destinations within the state:
- Vice City
- Leonida Keys
- Grassrivers
- Port Gellhorn
- Ambrosia
- Mount Kalaga
They’re all presented the same way: each destination has its own heading, a short subheading, a descriptive paragraph, and an “Explore” button naming the location and linking to a video. In this line-up, Grassrivers isn’t a bonus or a secondary spot — it’s one of six equally weighted entries.
A hierarchy does show through in the section’s own subheading, though: Vice City is presented as the state’s centre, and the other five destinations as what lies beyond it. That lines up with the shot where the city appears on the horizon from the swamp.
If you’re after the state’s broader geography rather than just the swamp, see our piece on the GTA 6 map.
What’s confirmed and what isn’t: an honest table
| Officially confirmed | Not officially confirmed |
|---|---|
| A text description of the region on the Only in Leonida page | Any map of Leonida or Grassrivers, in any form |
| A direct statement that alligators aren’t the biggest danger | Which predators are actually more dangerous |
| A shot of a speedboat with the Vice City skyline on the horizon | The region’s size or distances to other locations |
| A shot of an airboat with prey and weapons | Names of the people shown in those shots |
| Grassrivers’ place among the state’s six destinations | A list of districts or settlements within Grassrivers |
| A video linked from the “Explore” button on the page | Any written, shot-by-shot breakdown of the reveal from Rockstar |
What we’re not claiming
Short and blunt, because this is exactly where speculation tends to creep in.
- We don’t know which predators are more dangerous than alligators. Rockstar said they exist. Full stop.
- We don’t know whether missions take place in Grassrivers, or what they’d involve. Nothing has been said about this.
- We don’t know the region’s size, either in absolute terms or as a share of the map.
- We don’t know who the three people on the airboat are. Rockstar hasn’t named them.
- We don’t know how the region is structured internally — whether it has settlements, what they’re called, or how many there are.
- We don’t know whether every swamp shot in the game belongs to Grassrivers specifically. Rockstar attached specific shots to this region, not swamps in general.
That list looks longer than what’s actually confirmed. It is — and that’s the normal state of affairs for a location that so far has one official description and a handful of images behind it.
How to check this yourself
Everything above comes from two pages on the official site. You can verify it in three steps:
- Open rockstargames.com/VI/only-in-leonida. Find the Grassrivers block — it has a heading, subheading, description paragraph, and a video button. Count the blocks: there are six.
- Read the full Grassrivers paragraph. The line about more dangerous predators and stranger discoveries sits right there, in Rockstar’s own text.
- Open rockstargames.com/VI/media. Go through the sections: Videos, Clips, Screenshots, Ultimate Edition Benefits, Vintage Vice City Pack, Artwork & Wallpapers. There’s no map in any of them.
That’s the principle we work by: we only use what you can open and see on the developer’s own site. For more on that approach, see our piece on official GTA 6 sources.
Where the August reveal fits in
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look is dated 27 August 2026 on the official site. Rockstar credited it as assembled from in-game footage captured on PlayStation 5 — meaning it’s gameplay, not a pre-rendered trailer. Rockstar hasn’t published a written, shot-by-shot breakdown of the reveal, so the only way to see its actual content is to watch the official video itself. We’ve covered the reveal separately: the Extended Look from 27 August.
The release date also sits on the official pages: 19 November 2026, in a “Coming November 19, 2026” banner. The platforms listed there are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; PC isn’t among them. If that’s the question you’re after, see our breakdown of GTA 6 platforms.
In short
Grassrivers is Leonida’s swamp region, one of six official state destinations; Rockstar states directly that alligators aren’t the biggest danger there, without explaining what is. There’s no official map of Leonida, and everything above is the full extent of what’s officially known about the region as of 28 August 2026.
