GTA 6 platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S and why no PS4
The date may change — we follow official announcements and update this page.
Contents
Updated 28 August 2026, after the An Extended Look show. The platform list did not change: the official video description ends on PlayStation 5 and November 19, and the word “PC” appears neither on the game page nor on the show page. Frame rate was not mentioned either, so the section below still stands. More — our breakdown of the show. GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. This is not a provisional “so far” list — it is the complete set of announced platforms as of August 2026.
Below: what is technically confirmed, what is not, and why the older consoles fell off the list for good.
The full platform picture
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | ✅ confirmed, releasing 19.11.2026 |
| Xbox Series X|S | ✅ confirmed, releasing 19.11.2026 |
| PS5 Pro | ✅ supported, with an “enhanced” tag |
| PC | ❌ not announced |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | ❌ not announced (rumours point to 2027) |
| PlayStation 4 | ❌ not announced and not expected |
| Xbox One | ❌ not announced and not expected |
What the store listing itself confirms
The most reliable source of technical detail right now is not news coverage but the game’s own PlayStation Store card. It lists:
- PS5 Pro Enhanced — the official enhanced-support tag
- DualSense haptic feedback and trigger effect support
- offline play available — i.e. the single-player campaign works without internet
- Remote Play supported
- optional in-game purchases
- a provisional PEGI 18 rating on the European store listings (the US store uses the ESRB system instead, and we have not verified its rating for this title)
Small details, but confirmed by a primary source rather than by retelling.
The unanswered question: 60 fps or 30
The “PS5 Pro Enhanced” tag does not mean 60 frames per second. It means only that the game does something with the extra power of a PS5 Pro — that could be higher resolution, a more stable image or ray tracing.
Which of those it is has not been announced by anyone. Not Rockstar, not Sony, not Microsoft — no frame rate, no resolution, no graphics modes.
Technical analysts, Digital Foundry among them, consider a stable 60 fps on a base PS5 unlikely because of CPU limits, and expect 30 fps as the baseline target. That is a specialist forecast, not a fact — we label it as such because the difference matters here.
⚠️ If you see an article with a neat “quality mode / performance mode” table and numbers in it, it is invented. No source has that data yet.
Why there is no PS4 or Xbox One version
“GTA 6 on PS4” is still a popular question, and the answer is unambiguous: there will be no eighth-generation console version.
The reason is architecture, not greed. The PS5 and Series X|S are built around a fast NVMe drive that streams the game world in on the fly. Games designed for that do not “scale down” to a console with a mechanical hard drive — you would have to rebuild the world-streaming system itself.
The historical parallel here is misleading. GTA 5 launched on PS3 and only later moved to a new generation — it was moving forward. With GTA 6 there is no backward move: the game was designed for the current generation from the start.
What that means in practice: PS4 and Xbox One owners need a new console to play. The cheapest officially supported entry point is an Xbox Series S.
Switch 2 — rumour only
There is no official announcement of a Nintendo Switch 2 version. Not from Rockstar, not from Nintendo.
At the same time the press carries insider reports: Nintendo is supposedly in talks with Rockstar and Take-Two, and a port could arrive in 2027. Those reports come from insiders rather than from the companies, and they contradict each other on the details.
Our position: treat Switch 2 as a platform without this game. If a port is ever announced, that will be news. Buying a console for it now means paying for a rumour.
On PC, briefly
No PC version has been announced at all: no date, and no confirmation that one is being made. Which is also why no official system requirements exist — everything circulating under that name is invented. We covered that separately in our piece on system requirements.
If you mostly play on PC, plan for a November 2026 without GTA 6.
Which console to buy if you have none
The cheapest official way in is an Xbox Series S, the most confirmed advantages on the store card belong to PlayStation 5, and PS5 Pro carries a support tag with no announced numbers behind it. The full version of that decision — including the Series S storage arithmetic and what the “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” badge officially covers — is in our best console for GTA 6 guide.
We will update this page the moment Rockstar or Sony names a frame rate and graphics modes. We are not going to invent those numbers before then.
Frequently asked questions
What platforms is GTA 6 coming to?
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. That is the complete list of announced platforms as of August 2026.
Will GTA 6 be on PS4 or Xbox One?
No. Previous-generation consoles are not on the platform list, and Rockstar has given no hint of a version for them.
Does GTA 6 support PS5 Pro?
Yes. The game's PlayStation Store page carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced tag. What that actually delivers — 60 fps, higher resolution or ray tracing — has not been announced.
What frame rate will GTA 6 run at?
Not announced. Neither Rockstar nor Sony nor Microsoft has named a frame rate or a resolution. Anything you see with specific numbers is somebody's estimate.
Is GTA 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2?
Not officially announced. Insiders report a possible port in 2027, but that is a rumour with no confirmation from Rockstar or Nintendo.
Do you need PS Plus for GTA 6?
For single-player, no — the store page lists offline play as available. For online modes the terms have not been announced.
