Cooked fish sells for one and a half times the raw price. That is the entire economy of cooking in one sentence — and also the cheapest way to raise your income, since it needs neither new weapons nor a new boat.
The grill has to be lit first
The grill stands on the third island, but it starts cold. To fire it up:
- Take the standard boss lure.
- Catch the shark mini-boss — it swims near the third island.
- Bring the carcass to the NPC standing by the grill. The fire lights.
The Grillmaster achievement (“start the grill”) sits at 80.3% of players — nearly everyone who reached the third island has done it.
How not to burn the fish
The mechanic is simple but unexplained: hold F while the fish cooks and take it off in time. Leave it too long and it burns and sells for less than raw.
⚠️ You do need to burn one on purpose, though: Yummy in my tummy (“eat a burnt creature”) is held by only 47.8% of players. The reason that number is so low is precisely that everyone carefully avoids burning.
Hunger and health
Food does two jobs at once — it fills hunger and it heals. And one item overrides everything else:
Crab sticks from the spider crab restore 100% hunger and 100% health, even raw. A single carcass yields the shell plus three sticks. That makes the late-game crab farm not just an income source but an unlimited medkit — the full farm layout.

Competitive eating — eating a mini-boss — sits at just 22.2%, for the same reason as the burnt fish: a mini-boss carcass normally goes to a vendor or an NPC rather than into your mouth.
A detail that saves panic
Seagulls steal items, but they will not touch boss meat. The carcass you are carrying to the grill or to an NPC cannot be taken from you — no need to sprint.
Sound and patches
Patch 1.0.8, 24 August 2026 tied the fire’s sizzling to the sound effects volume. Before that the sound played regardless of settings. If your FX are at zero and the grill seems dead — it is working, just silent.
