Bane is a ranged all-round hero who takes individual enemies out of the fight rather than killing them with fast damage. His attack range is 425, his official Valve difficulty rating is 2 out of 3, and all three of his attributes are identical: 23, with +2.5 growth per level.

Below is what’s actually known about him from official data, how to read his abilities, and what to expect in your first matches. You won’t find meta picks, tier lists or “best builds” here — we don’t have that data, and we’re not going to make it up.

What the official Valve feed says

Everything below comes from the game’s public data feed and his hero page.

Stat Value
Primary attribute all-round
Hero list identifier 3
Strength 23 (+2.5 per level)
Agility 23 (+2.5 per level)
Intelligence 23 (+2.5 per level)
Attack range 425
Base damage 24–30
Armour 4.8333335
Movement speed 305
Difficulty 2 out of 3
Abilities 5
Talents 8

The standout feature here is symmetry. A starting 23 in strength, agility and intelligence, with the same 2.5 growth in each, is an unusual pattern. Most heroes have one attribute that scales noticeably faster than the others, and that attribute defines what the hero turns into by the late game. Bane has no such lean — he gains health, mana, armour and attack speed at an even rate across the board.

The practical effect is simple: Bane doesn’t “spike” in any one direction. He doesn’t suddenly become a durable tank, and he doesn’t suddenly become a big-damage carry off agility items. His value sits in his abilities, and his stats just keep him from falling apart.

Five abilities: what they do

The exact numbers — damage, duration, cooldowns and mana costs — live in Valve’s in-client descriptions and change with patches. We’re not listing them here: they’re not in our facts, and we won’t invent them. So what follows is the substance, put in our own words.

Enfeeble. Cast on an enemy hero, it weakens them in a straight fight — their attacks stop hitting hard. It isn’t a stun; the target still moves and acts, it’s just that their basic attacks lose their bite. The ability is aimed squarely at heroes who win fights through auto-attacks.

Brain Sap. A targeted ability on an enemy hero that drains their health while restoring Bane’s own. It’s one of the rare cases where a single button both pressures the enemy and keeps you alive on the lane.

Nightmare. Takes a target out of the fight entirely: they fall asleep and do nothing until woken up. The sleep is fragile — damage to the sleeping hero breaks it, so your own allies can ruin the effect if they’re not paying attention. That’s the main reason Bane demands you keep an eye on what your team is doing.

Fiend’s Grip. His ultimate. Bane locks one enemy hero in place and holds them there for as long as he himself doesn’t move. The key phrase is “as long as he himself doesn’t move” — the moment you get interrupted, the effect ends. So Bane’s ultimate always comes down to whether your allies cover you, not just whether you pressed it correctly.

Ichor Nykthasi. Fifth on the hero’s ability list. It isn’t an active button in the same sense as the previous four — read its description in the client before you play, since Valve changes both the wording and the numbers from patch to patch.

On top of that there’s a talent tree with 8 talents, unlocked as you level up, offering a choice between different upgrades. What’s actually on offer in the current version is something to check in the game itself — the feed only tells us how many there are.

Where he’s strong

A 425 attack range lets you apply pressure from a safe distance. You don’t have to walk into hits to get last hits and harass the enemy — that alone makes the early lane noticeably easier for a beginner who isn’t yet used to melee distances. If last hits are new territory for you, start with our guide on last hits and denies.

Two of his four active abilities disable the enemy rather than damage them. That means Bane stays useful even when your gold is low and your items are weak. A hero who’s asleep or locked in place can’t fight back, no matter what your inventory is worth.

An even 2.5 growth across all three attributes makes him predictable. He doesn’t depend on a single stat, and he doesn’t “break” if a game goes off-script.

Difficulty 2 out of 3 doesn’t mean “for experts only.” That rating means Valve considers him middling in demand: the basic actions are straightforward, and the real difficulty starts with timing.

Where he’s vulnerable

Armour of 4.8333335 and base damage of 24–30 aren’t the numbers of a fighter. In a straight trade of blows, Bane loses. His role isn’t to hit — it’s to disrupt, and any situation where you’re caught alone with your abilities down ends badly.

A movement speed of 305 won’t save you from a mistake. That’s an ordinary value, not an escape tool. If you’ve walked in too deep, you probably won’t walk back out.

His ultimate requires standing still. That makes Bane more dependent on his team than most heroes: a well-placed ultimate at the wrong moment gets broken by anyone.

Difficulty 2 out of 3 is about target selection, not button presses. Putting an enemy to sleep who doesn’t matter, or weakening someone who wasn’t attacking with their hands anyway, is a classic beginner mistake, and no amount of items makes up for it.

Since Bane leans so heavily on what your teammates do, it’s worth getting familiar with the five positions first — without that, his abilities just look like a random set of effects.

How to try him for the first time

  1. Start in a bot match or unranked mode. The goal of your first game isn’t to win — it’s to see how each of the five abilities actually works.
  2. Read the in-client descriptions before you start. That’s where the current cooldown and mana-cost numbers live — in the game, not in guides.
  3. Practise the combo. Try putting one enemy to sleep while your team fights another, and see how quickly the sleep breaks under stray damage.
  4. Hold the 425 range deliberately. Don’t step closer than you need to — that’s the main advantage that’s easy to lose out of habit.
  5. Look at the 8-talent tree after a few games. Learn the mechanics first, optimise the talent choices second.

If this is your very first time in the game, start with what to do in the first hour and come back to this hero afterwards. A general list of easy heroes to start with is gathered separately in our guide to heroes for beginners.

What we don’t claim

⚠️ We’re not saying Bane is strong or weak in the current patch — we don’t have balance data, win rates or pick popularity, and Valve doesn’t publish that kind of rating in this feed.

⚠️ We don’t give item builds or skill-order recommendations. Not because they don’t exist, but because any specifics of that kind, without a source, turn into someone’s guesswork.

⚠️ We don’t quote the numbers inside his abilities — damage, duration, cooldowns. They live in the game client, change with updates, and that’s where to look. Keeping track of changes is easiest through updates and patches.

⚠️ We’re not promising that Bane will start winning you games. He gives you control tools; whether they work depends on who you target and whether your team backs you up.

In short

Bane is an all-round hero with a 425 attack range, an identical 23 in every stat and 2.5 growth in each, five abilities and 8 talents; his strength is taking enemies out of the fight, and his weakness is that with 4.8333335 armour and 24–30 damage, he can’t hold his own in a straight fight.
