Drow Ranger in Dota 2: Beginner's Guide
Contents
Drow Ranger is a ranged hero with agility as her primary attribute, a 625 attack range that’s the longest advantage she has, and the lowest difficulty mark on Valve’s scale: 1 out of 3. Teams pick her when they need someone who fights from a distance and slowly turns accumulated gold into damage.
Below is what Valve’s official data feed says about the hero, and how to read those numbers. Separately, we flag what we’re not claiming, because we don’t have data for it.
Base stats
Here’s what the Valve feed gives for attribute growth:
| Attribute | Base | Growth per level |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 16 | +1.9 |
| Agility | 24 | +2.8 |
| Intelligence | 15 | +1.4 |
Her primary attribute is agility, and it’s also the fastest-growing: +2.8, against +1.9 for strength and +1.4 for intelligence. So with every level, the gap between her primary attribute and the other two widens.
And here are the combat stats:
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Attack range | 625 |
| Base damage | 51–58 |
| Armour | 4 |
| Movement speed | 310 |
| Valve difficulty rating | 1 of 3 |
| Number of abilities | 6 |
| Talents in the tree | 8 |
The headline figure here is 625. That’s the range her basic attack fires from, and her entire playstyle is built around it: keep the distance, don’t let the enemy close it.
6 abilities: what they do
Drow Ranger has 6 abilities. Their official names in the client are Frost Arrows, Wave of Silence, Multishot, Glaciate, Trueshot Aura and Marksmanship.
In plain terms, without numbers (we’re not giving exact damage, duration or cooldown figures — they’re not in our list of facts, and they shift from patch to patch in the client anyway):
- Frost Arrows — a modifier on her basic attack: each shot slows the target. This is her main tool for keeping enemies from closing in.
- Wave of Silence — an active ability that hits enemies in front of her with a wave, knocking them back and briefly stopping them from casting abilities.
- Multishot — a volley of arrows fired in the direction she’s facing. It hits an area, not a single target.
- Glaciate — an ice obstacle she uses to block off space and make it harder for enemies to approach.
- Trueshot Aura — an aura that boosts attack for the hero herself and allies nearby.
- Marksmanship — a passive tied to distance: the further she is from enemies, the better it works.
⚠️ These are plain-language summaries of the general idea, not text lifted from the game client. Before you play, open the hero page and read the official wording: https://www.dota2.com/hero/drow_ranger. That’s also where you’ll find the current numbers, which we’re deliberately not guessing at here.
Where the hero is strong
Range. 625 is a lot. She gets shots off before enemies can reach her, and has room to retreat. Paired with the slow from Frost Arrows, that produces the classic pattern: hit, back off, hit again.
Agility growth. +2.8 per level is the fastest growth of her three stats, and it feeds directly into her primary attribute. As levels go by, her basic attack becomes her main source of damage.
4 armour at the start. On its own that’s neither a lot nor a little, but combined with a 625 range, it means she doesn’t have to take damage if she’s positioned correctly.
A simple kit to understand. A difficulty rating of 1 out of 3 is Valve’s own assessment, and it means playing her doesn’t demand complex combos — most of the time you’re just attacking and holding position.
Where the hero is vulnerable
Strength 16 with +1.9. That’s the second-slowest growth rate of the three, and it plainly means her health pool grows at a modest pace. She’s not built to soak up hits.
Movement speed 310. Running from anyone faster or with a gap-closer will be difficult. A positioning mistake is costly here — which is exactly why distance isn’t a “bonus” for her, it’s a survival condition.
Her passive depends on distance. Marksmanship rewards fighting from afar — so when an enemy gets in close, she loses both her safety and part of her power. That’s not two separate downsides; it’s the same one.
Cooldowns. Her active abilities — Wave of Silence, Multishot, Glaciate — aren’t unlimited. We’re not writing down exactly how many seconds they take to recharge: those figures aren’t in our source, and they change with patches. Check the client before a match.
Trying the hero for the first time
- Pick her in an unranked match first, not ranked. Before thinking about rank, get a feel for how a 625 attack range plays out in a fight. For more on modes and how matchmaking works, see the guide on matchmaking and MMR.
- Practise last-hitting creeps. For a hero who scales through agility, gold is her main resource. Base damage of 51–58 gives a decent start for landing last hits. The mechanic is covered in the last hits and denies guide.
- Understand where you should stand. Your role in the lane and in fights determines who’s covering you. Role breakdowns are in the guide on Dota 2 positions.
- Don’t be the one who initiates. Strength 16 with +1.9 growth won’t forgive that. Your place is behind your allies, at the edge of your attack range.
- Look at the talent tree. There are 8 talents there. Read all of them before the match, so you’re not stopping to think mid-fight.

What we’re not claiming
- We’re not naming a “best item build.” That data isn’t in our source, and any list without a source is someone’s opinion presented as fact.
- We’re not giving win rates, tier lists or her place in the current meta. We haven’t measured it, so we’re not writing it.
- We’re not listing ability damage, durations or cooldowns. The official feed that gave us the rest of these numbers didn’t give us those values.
- We’re not promising you’ll win more often with this hero. A difficulty rating of 1 out of 3 is Valve’s assessment of how demanding the controls are, not a forecast of results.
- We’re not quoting the ability descriptions from the client. We kept the official names and described the mechanics in our own general terms.
Anything you want to check yourself can be checked on Valve’s hero page: https://www.dota2.com/hero/drow_ranger. In Valve’s hero list, she’s hero ID 6.
In short
Drow Ranger is a ranged hero with agility as her primary attribute, a 625 attack range and a Valve difficulty rating of 1 out of 3; her strength lies in distance and fast agility growth (+2.8), while her weakness is low strength growth (+1.9) and a 310 movement speed, which means any positioning mistake hurts badly.
