Updated 28 August 2026, after the An Extended Look show. The timeline now has a row for the showing itself. It did not move the release date: the game page still says 19 November 2026. What the show confirmed and what it did not show — in our breakdown. The official history of GTA 6 is now more than four years long — and it contains only a handful of events Rockstar actually confirmed. What follows is the complete timeline drawn from the primary source alone: the company’s own Newswire posts, quoted verbatim. Plus one event Rockstar did not plan.

4 February 2022 — a confirmation with no name attached

The first official fact did not arrive in a trailer or at a trade show. It arrived inside an ordinary post about a GTA Online update. Under the heading “What’s Next”, Rockstar wrote:

“…we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”

Note the phrasing: the next entry in the series, not GTA 6. The company did not use the name then — and would not use it for nearly two more years.

7 July 2022 — what it cost the other games

Five months later came another update post, containing a detail that is easy to skip past but shows the project’s scale better than any trailer. Explaining to Red Dead Online players why major updates had stopped, Rockstar wrote:

“Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series…”

So by 2022 GTA 6 was already drawing resources away from another of the company’s major games. That is an official statement of priority, not an insider rumour.

18–19 September 2022 — the leak nobody planned

The one event on this list Rockstar did not announce.

Overnight on 18 September, a package of early development material appeared on the GTAForums message board. According to the BBC it amounted to more than 90 videos and images: animation tests, working level layouts, isolated gameplay demonstrations. The next day the company confirmed the material was genuine: its statement referred to a “network intrusion” and to stolen “early development footage”.

Three things worth knowing about that leak:

  1. It confirmed the female protagonist. Until then that had been a long-running rumour. After the leak it was effectively established fact — though Rockstar only made it official more than a year later, in Trailer 1.
  2. Rockstar said it expected no long-term effect on development. And by the dates, the first delay came two and a half years after the leak; the company has never drawn a line between the two.
  3. The material was early and internal. Judging today’s game by those frames is a mistake: four years of work separate them from release.

⚠️ We do not publish or describe frames from the leak. Everything presented as fact about the game on this site comes from material Rockstar showed itself.

5 December 2023 — Trailer 1 and the “2025” card

The first trailer went out ahead of schedule, after a watermarked copy leaked online hours before the premiere. The video closed on a simple “2025”.

That card became the reference point for every disappointment that followed: “2025” was never a specific date, but it read as a promise about the year.

2 May 2025 — the first delay

Eight months before the end of the promised year, Rockstar named its first real date — and it was already outside 2025:

“Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. We are very sorry that this is later than you expected.”

The explanation in the same post was singular:

“…we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

No mention of problems, of internal disputes, or of the leak. Only quality.

6 May 2025 — Trailer 2

The second trailer arrived four days after the delay. The order matters: bad news first, good news second. That is a deliberate communications sequence, not a coincidence.

6 November 2025 — the second delay

The second delay was announced 6 months and 20 days before the date then in force. The wording repeats the first almost verbatim:

“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

Between them, the two delays moved the date by 5 months and 24 days — from 26 May to 19 November 2026.

2026 — the year everything got specific

After the second delay the tone changed: general promises gave way to concrete actions.

  • 18 and 24 June — two posts about pre-orders;
  • 25 June — pre-orders actually opened, with prices and edition contents;
  • 6 AugustAn Extended Look announced for 27 August;
  • 18–25 August — a week of daily leaks of unreleased gameplay;
  • 26 August — Rockstar first official statement on the leaks: 19 November confirmed, the showing not cancelled;
  • 19 November — release.

Open pre-orders are the strongest signal available today: the company has started taking money against a specific date.

August 2026 — a week of leaks and Rockstar first statement

From 18 August, unreleased gameplay clips began appearing online daily. Rockstar did not publish them and has confirmed no individual shot; as of 25 August the leaks had been running for a week. On 26 August the company spoke publicly for the first time — asking players to wait and experience the game themselves on 19 November. Neither the release date nor the showing moved because of the leaks.

For a development history, one thing matters here: this is the second time material from the game has reached the public against the company will — after the 2022 breach. More in Rockstar statement on the leaks.

Will there be a third delay

The honest answer: unknown, and there is no data to forecast from.

What can be stated:

  • both delays were announced with no advance signal — no hints, no “we are reviewing our timelines”;
  • the second came 6 months and 20 days out. There is less than that left before 19 November;
  • pre-orders are open, the price is set, and the date is printed on store listings.

What cannot be stated: that open pre-orders make a delay impossible. They make it more expensive for the company — nothing more.

A few numbers for scale

  • from the official development confirmation to release — 4 years, 9 months and 15 days;
  • from Trailer 1 to release — 2 years, 11 months and 14 days;
  • between GTA 5 and GTA 6 — 13 years and 2 months.

The bottom line

GTA 6 has officially existed since 4 February 2022. In that time there have been two delays, both given the same reason in Rockstar’s own words: time to reach the quality it wants. There was one network intrusion, which the company confirmed. And there was one trailer that shipped early because of a leak.

An Extended Look has aired: Rockstar’s own page dates it 27 August 2026, and the official video went up at 04:00 Kyiv time on 28 August. It brought no third release date — 19 November 2026 stands. What the show confirmed, and what Rockstar did not put in writing, is in our breakdown of the show.

Frequently asked questions

When did Rockstar officially confirm GTA 6 was in development?

On 4 February 2022, inside a post called Grand Theft Auto Community Update. The wording was that active development on the next entry in the series was well underway. The name GTA 6 did not appear in that post.

How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?

Twice. On 2 May 2025 the date moved from 2025 to 26 May 2026. On 6 November 2025 it moved again, to 19 November 2026. Together that is almost six months.

Why was GTA 6 delayed?

Rockstar gave the same reason both times: extra time to finish the game at the level of quality it wanted. The company has never officially offered any other explanation.

Will there be a third GTA 6 delay?

Unknown. Both announcements came with no advance signal at all. Pre-orders are open and money is being taken, but that is not a guarantee of the date.

What happened with the GTA 6 leak in 2022?

In September 2022 an attacker breached Rockstar's network and posted more than 90 videos and images from early development. The company confirmed the intrusion and said it did not expect any long-term effect on development.

How long was the gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6?

Thirteen years and two months. GTA 5 launched on 17 September 2013; GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026.
