There is no official GTA 6 install size. Rockstar has not published one on the game’s own store page or in any post. If you see an exact number of gigabytes somewhere, it did not come from an official source.

That does not mean you cannot prepare. Rockstar has two previous big releases with published requirements, and they set an honest upper bound.

What the previous Rockstar games needed

These figures come from the requirements the publisher itself publishes on the games’ Steam pages.

An important caveat up front: these are PC requirements, not console install sizes. Console builds normally differ, in either direction. But they pin down the order of magnitude exactly: a modern big Rockstar game is a hundred to a hundred and fifty gigabytes, not forty.

There is a detail worth noticing inside the table itself: the newer version of GTA 5 needs less space than the old one. Enhanced asks for 105 GB against Legacy’s 125 GB. A remaster does not automatically mean a bigger download — compression and repacked assets do real work.

How much space you actually have

Now the other half of the equation: console drives. These figures are official.

And here is the trap Sony spells out itself, in the small print on the console page: part of the drive is reserved for system software and other functions, so the available capacity varies. On top of that, manufacturers count a gigabyte as a billion bytes and the system does not. The upshot is simple: the number on the box is not the number you see in free space.

Who should actually be worried

Owners of the 512 GB Xbox Series S. Do the sum: if GTA 6 lands at the RDR 2 level, that is roughly a third of the entire drive for one game. Add the system reserve and whatever is already installed, and running out is close to guaranteed.

⚠️ That arithmetic is ours, not a Rockstar forecast. We take the largest known precedent (150 GB) and divide it by the official capacity. The real GTA 6 size could turn out smaller or larger — we simply do not know, and we are not going to invent it.

PS5 and 1 TB Series X owners should not relax either: one 150 GB game plus a handful of others installed, and the free space disappears faster than you would expect.

What to do now

1. Check how much free space you have. It takes a minute, and every decision after this depends on that number.
2. Delete what you no longer play. The cheapest option by far. Digital purchases do not vanish — you can always download the game again.
3. If space is tight, expand the drive. The PS5 has an M.2 SSD slot and Sony documents the procedure in its own support pages. For Xbox Series X and S there are official 1 TB storage expansion cards. You do not have to do it today, but price it up early: this kind of hardware gets more expensive in the run-up to a major release.
4. Ignore “leaked file sizes”. Exactly as with leaked system requirements — there are no official numbers, because the only things officially announced are the platforms and the date.

When we will know for certain

Install sizes normally appear on the PlayStation and Xbox store pages when preloading opens — and that date now has a number on it: Rockstar gives 12 November 2026, a week before launch. That is most likely when we finally see an official figure. It is not a promise from Rockstar to publish the size that day — it is simply how this usually goes; more on the dates themselves in our guide on how to pre-order GTA 6.
