GTA 6 preload begins on 12 November 2026 — at local midnight. Not New York time, not UTC: the clock your console is set to.
That is the headline answer. Around it sit four things people actually trip over — space, the box, code regions, and the 20 November date. Here is each one.
Why you do not need timezone maths here
Launch is different. The PlayStation Store listing shows 18 November 2026, 22:00 UTC in some regions, which looks like a different date but is exactly midnight on 19 November in Kyiv and Warsaw. We worked that arithmetic out separately in our piece on the release date.
Preload needs no arithmetic at all. Rockstar support states it plainly: it starts at local midnight on 12 November. Which means:
| City | Preload starts |
|---|---|
| London | 00:00, 12 November |
| New York | 00:00, 12 November |
| Warsaw | 00:00, 12 November |
| Sydney | 00:00, 12 November |
It looks like a table about nothing — and that is the point. Unlike the unlock, preload has no single global minute. Every region enters its own midnight, so nobody is downloading while you wait.
How much space to prepare
Rockstar has not stated the size of GTA 6. Not on the game page, not in any post — and we are not going to invent a number.
What can be measured is precedent. The largest in Rockstar’s own PC requirements is Red Dead Redemption 2 at 150 GB. The full breakdown, with console capacities and the Series S arithmetic, is in our file size article.
The practical conclusion is simple: clear space before 12 November, not after. The reason is not obvious — the exact size usually appears on store pages right before preload opens. Learning the number and cleaning out a console in the same night is already a race.
Keep the day-one patch in mind separately. For a game this size it is close to certain, and it needs room on top of the game itself.
The box is a code, and it travels by post
This one needs precision, because the confusion costs a week.
The physical edition of GTA 6 contains no disc. Inside the box is a digital download code — Rockstar support says so directly, and gives the reason just as directly: so that box buyers can also start preloading on 12 November.
Consequences worth planning around:
- The box reaches shelves, shipping and store pickup from 12 November — not earlier.
- The code works as soon as you have it: redeem it and the preload begins.
- If delivery takes three days, you lose three days of the preload week. On a ~150 GB download over a slow line, that is a real difference.
- There is no physical Ultimate Edition at all. Owners of the boxed Standard Edition can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately — but only after redeeming their code.
If the goal is playing on the evening of 19 November rather than the 21st, the digital version is simply more reliable here. That is not advice to buy digital; it is delivery arithmetic.
⚠️ Code regions: the most expensive mistake of the week
This is the part missing from every earlier article we wrote — and the one that burns key-reseller shoppers every single year.
Rockstar ties code redemption to the region attached to your platform account, and for PlayStation it publishes the country list grouped into buckets:
| Bucket | Accounts it covers |
|---|---|
| North America | Canada, United States |
| United Kingdom | United Kingdom |
| Brazil | Brazil |
| LATAM | Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and other Latin American countries |
| Japan | Japan |
| Korea | South Korea |
| Saudi Arabia & UAE | Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates |
| Rest of Asia | Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand |
| Rest of EMEA and Asia | Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, India, New Zealand, South Africa and around two dozen more |
What that means in practice:
- A code sold for one bucket is not intended for an account in another. A cheap UK or US key on an EU account is a risk, not a saving.
- Xbox codes are not region-locked, so this problem does not exist there.
- Regional rules can be stricter still: for Japan, Rockstar notes separately that codes expire 170 days after issue because of local regulation.
- Rockstar’s own recommendation is to buy from a retailer in the country your platform account belongs to.
We are summarising a published list, not guaranteeing any particular seller. If you buy from a reseller, ask outright which region the key was issued for and compare it against your account.
12 and 20 November are different deadlines
The two dates blur together easily, and they are about different things:
| Date | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| 12 November | Preload opens. Boxes reach shipping and shelves. |
| 19 November | The game unlocks. Anyone who preloaded plays almost immediately. |
| 20 November | Bonus cut-off: digital pre-orders and purchases before this date include the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+. |
So preload is not a condition of the bonus, and the bonus is not tied to preloading. The pack and the membership are covered in our pre-order guide.
The trap nobody plans for: automatic downloads
If you ever change your mind and want to cancel, do it before 12 November, not after.
The reason is that on PlayStation, automatic downloads will start pulling the game exactly then, by itself, without any action from you. And once the main game download has begun, the cancellation terms change. The full procedure is in our guide to cancelling a pre-order.
Checklist for 12 November
- Clear the space. Aim for 150 GB minimum plus patch headroom. Do not leave it to the night preload opens.
- Check your account region and the code region, if you are buying outside your own country’s digital store.
- Buying a box? Order with delivery time in mind — it will not ship before 12 November.
- Settle any cancellation question early, if there is a shadow of doubt.
- Check your connection. 150 GB at 20 Mbps is roughly 17 hours of continuous downloading; at 100 Mbps, about 3.5. Hardware and connection requirements are in our system requirements article.
What we cannot claim
- The exact size of the game. It has not been announced. 150 GB is a measured RDR 2 precedent, not a GTA 6 figure.
- That the size will appear on 12 November. Rockstar committed to the preload date, not to publishing a size the same day.
- The size of the day-one patch. We are confident there will be one; its size has not been announced.
- That boxes will arrive everywhere on 12 November. Rockstar describes expected availability for shipping and pickup from that date — actual timing depends on the retailer and the country.
- Whether any given third-party key will work on your account. We are relaying an official region list, not vouching for a seller.
Every date and phrasing here was checked against Rockstar’s own pages on 14 August 2026. If something changes, we will update this page and say what changed.
Bottom line
- Preload is 12 November 2026, at local midnight. No timezone maths needed.
- Clear space before that date: 150 GB plus headroom is the working figure.
- The box is a code with no disc, and it ships from 12 November.
- PlayStation codes are tied to your account region; Xbox codes are not.
- 20 November is about bonuses, not downloads. Do not conflate the two.
Frequently asked questions
When does GTA 6 preload start?
On 12 November 2026 at local midnight. That is Rockstar support's own wording — not US time, not UTC, but the clock your console is set to.
Do I have to wait until 19 November to start downloading?
No. That is the whole point of a preload: the game downloads a week early and simply unlocks on 19 November. Anyone who preloaded plays almost immediately.
How much space should I clear in advance?
No official size for GTA 6 exists. Rockstar's largest measured precedent is 150 GB in the Red Dead Redemption 2 requirements, so prepare at least that much plus room for a patch.
Can the boxed edition be preloaded too?
Yes, but you need the box first: it holds a download code and no disc, and it only ships and reaches shelves from 12 November. The code works the moment you redeem it.
Will a code bought in another country work?
On PlayStation, not necessarily. Rockstar ties redemption to your platform account's region and publishes a list of countries grouped into buckets. Xbox codes are not region-locked.
What happens if I miss the preload?
Nothing bad except time. The download simply starts on 19 November, alongside millions of other players, and the speed will reflect that.
