No official frame rate has been announced for GTA 6. Neither Rockstar nor Sony has named a frame rate, a resolution or a list of graphics modes — not for PS5, and not for PS5 Pro.
The closest thing to an answer as of 31 August 2026: 30 fps in current builds, attributed to a Rockstar North developer. Below is exactly what was said, whose hands that sentence passed through, and why we label this page a rumour rather than a fact.
Short answer as a table
| Question | Status on 31 August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Official frame rate on PS5 | Not announced |
| What the developer said | 30 fps in current console builds (relayed) |
| 60 fps mode at launch | Neither confirmed nor denied |
| A separate figure for PS5 Pro | None at all |
| Resolution | Not announced |
| 120 Hz mode | Never mentioned |
| Ray tracing on consoles | Not confirmed |
Where “30 fps” came from: the source chain
This is the most important part of the page, and we show it in full instead of hiding it behind the word “reportedly”.
| Link | Who / what |
|---|---|
| 1. Original source | Rob Nelson — Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North |
| 2. Circumstances | A creator visit to the studio; according to Kotaku, YouTuber Davy Jones was among those present |
| 3. Publication | The Brazilian outlet Flow Games, in Portuguese |
| 4. Translation | Machine translation into English |
| 5. Distribution | Kotaku, Notebookcheck, eXputer and others |
eXputer puts it plainly: this is not an official Rockstar statement, but a relayed comment made in an informal setting. Rockstar has published no separate statement about frame rate.
⚠️ That is exactly why the whole page carries a “rumour” label. We do not write “Rockstar confirmed 30 fps”, because it did not.
What was actually said
Per the Flow Games account as presented by English-language outlets, it comes down to three points:
- At this stage of development, consoles run the game at 30 fps. The wording refers to current builds, not to the final version.
- The question of a 60 fps mode stayed open. Nelson, as relayed, said that would have to be checked with the technical team — meaning no decision existed at the time of the conversation, either for launch or later.
- There were no details on resolution or ray tracing. Nelson noted separately that he did not have specifics at that point.
Notebookcheck adds one more detail that matters most to Pro owners: the developer did not touch on PS5 Pro enhancements — higher frame rates and a 120 Hz option — at all.
Why 30 and not 60: the technical side
Here we are working from outlets’ reasoning, and we label it as such. Three arguments are made:
The game is CPU-bound, not GPU-bound. Crowds of lifelike NPCs and a large map load the processor specifically. Notebookcheck notes that the current console generation’s processors are already dated for this level of detail — and that even in the PS5 Pro the CPU is only modestly improved, despite a far stronger GPU.
The Extended Look was captured on a base PS5. According to Kotaku, the gameplay was recorded on a standard PlayStation 5. So the image everyone saw is what the console already delivers, not a preview of some future mode.
Rockstar’s own precedent. GTA 5 did not get 60 fps at launch; it came with a separate next-generation console edition. Red Dead Redemption 2, according to Kotaku, still has no official 60 fps update on modern consoles.
A second opinion: a former Rockstar technical director
Separately from the Flow Games story, a similar assessment came from John Ricchio — a former GTA technical director and Rockstar producer who worked on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption. On the podcast of Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, as relayed by TweakTown, he said getting GTA 6 to 60 fps on current consoles is unlikely without cutting back the visuals, and that Rockstar would sooner choose detail and object density over frame rate.
⚠️ This is a former employee’s opinion, not the studio’s position. It confirms nothing — it only shows the technical dilemma is real rather than invented by journalists.
TweakTown also mentions that leaks and retailer listings hinted at two modes (30 and 60 fps) on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not confirmed that, and we present it as context only, not as fact.
What about PS5 Pro
There is no separate figure — and that is not us being cautious, it is the state of affairs.
What is officially known about the console itself (from Sony’s announcement): rays are cast at double, and at times triple, the speed of a base PS5, and the machine-learning upscaler PSSR is available. How much of that reaches GTA 6 has not been said.
The one concrete estimate in public circulation comes from Digital Foundry analysts, who — as relayed by Notebookcheck — suggested that upscaling could make 40 fps a realistic figure. That is a third-party analyst estimate, not a promise from Sony or Rockstar.
What this means for a purchase is covered separately in our guide on whether to upgrade from PS5 to PS5 Pro.
The strongest official evidence is the silence
Sony has a dedicated page for GTA 6 features on PS5. It lists five things: Tempest 3D Audio spatial sound, fast loading via the SSD, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and the controller’s built-in speaker.
Not a word about frame rate, resolution or graphics modes.
This is not a gap in one press release. It is a consistent position: technical numbers are given nowhere — not on Rockstar’s page, not on PlayStation’s page, not in the store listing. A full breakdown of what is listed there is in our guide on GTA 6 platforms.
What would change this answer
We will update this page as soon as any of the following appears:
- an official Rockstar or Sony statement on frame rate;
- confirmation or denial of a 60 fps performance mode;
- separate figures for PS5 Pro;
- 120 Hz support;
- resolution in each of the modes.
The game launches on 19 November 2026 (date calendar). Technical details are usually made public closer to release.
What we are not claiming
- That Rockstar confirmed 30 fps. It did not. This is a relayed developer comment via a Portuguese-language outlet and machine translation.
- That there will be no 60 fps mode. The question stayed open in the relayed account itself.
- That PS5 Pro will run at 40 fps. That is a Digital Foundry estimate, not a statement.
- That Xbox Series X will be the same. No separate figures were given for Xbox.
- The resolution in any mode. It has not been announced.
- That the final version will perform like the build. Optimisation continues until release — standard practice, and we do not present a development state as a release state.
Summary
- There is no official frame rate — not for PS5, not for PS5 Pro.
- The only figure in circulation is 30 fps in current builds, and it is a relayed account, not a Rockstar statement.
- A 60 fps mode is neither confirmed nor denied.
- For PS5 Pro no separate figures were given at all; 40 fps is a third-party analyst estimate.
- Rockstar’s and PlayStation’s official pages are silent on frame rate — and that is the most reliable thing measurable today.
Frequently asked questions
How many frames per second will GTA 6 run at on PS5?
Officially, it has not been announced. The closest thing to an answer: Rob Nelson of Rockstar North, as relayed by the Brazilian outlet Flow Games, said current console builds run at 30 fps. That is a relayed developer comment, not a Rockstar statement.
Will there be a 60 fps mode at launch?
Neither confirmed nor denied. In the same relayed account, Nelson said that would have to be checked with the technical team — meaning no decision existed at the time of the conversation.
What frame rate will PS5 Pro get?
No separate figure has been given for the Pro. Notebookcheck notes explicitly that Nelson did not touch on PS5 Pro enhancements at all.
Has Rockstar officially confirmed 30 fps?
No. eXputer stresses that this is not an official Rockstar statement but a relayed comment made during a creator visit to the studio. The chain runs: developer → creators → Portuguese-language outlet → machine translation → English-language outlets.
Why not 60 fps if the console is powerful?
GTA 6's main load is crowds of NPCs and a huge map, which is a CPU limit. Notebookcheck points out that the current console generation's processors are already dated, and that even the PS5 Pro's CPU is only modestly improved.
GTA 5 runs at 60 fps on PS5 — why is this different?
GTA 5 did not get 60 fps at launch; it arrived with a separate next-generation console edition. Red Dead Redemption 2, according to Kotaku, still has no official 60 fps update on modern consoles.
