Updated 28 August 2026, after the An Extended Look show. The official written description of the story did not change: Rockstar’s pages still carry the same paragraph as before the show. More — our breakdown. The official GTA 6 story fits into a single paragraph. That is not a figure of speech: on the game’s own page Rockstar describes the plot in four sentences — and nowhere else, not in press releases and not on store cards, does it add anything to them.

That is why every long “full GTA 6 story” article elsewhere is built on guesswork. We did it differently: we took the official paragraph apart, gathered the remaining official references to the shape of the story — and then wrote out, separately, the long list of what Rockstar has not said.

What Rockstar actually said

The official description in our own words: the game is set in Vice City, in the state of Leonida. Jason and Lucia have always understood that the odds are stacked against them. But when an easy job goes wrong, they find themselves inside a criminal conspiracy that runs across the whole state — and to get out alive, they have to rely on each other more than ever.

One detail matters here: Rockstar uses that same text identically on its own site, in the page metadata and on the game’s PlayStation Store card. So it is not a cut-down “store version” — it is the official statement of the plot, and the only one that exists.

Four things that follow from it

This part is our reading, not Rockstar’s words. But it rests only on the text above.

  1. The setup is a job gone wrong. Not revenge, not arriving in a new city, not getting out of prison. The story starts at the moment something specific failed to go to plan.
  2. The scale is the state, not the city. The phrasing about a conspiracy running across Leonida explains why the game needs a map beyond Vice City. The six officially named destinations are covered in our piece on the GTA 6 map.
  3. The partnership is forced. Having to rely on each other is a statement about necessity, not romance. Rockstar never calls their relationship a romantic one in the plot description itself.
  4. The goal is framed as survival. Getting out alive — not getting rich, not taking over the city. For a GTA game that is a noticeably narrower frame than in previous entries.

Where the two of them start

The official biographies on the Only in Leonida page give both starting positions, and that is the only thing officially known about their pasts.

Jason Duval Lucia Caminos
Where he or she starts the Leonida Keys just out of Leonida Penitentiary
What they do works for local drug runners not officially stated
What keeps them there rent-free housing from Brian Heder in exchange for local shakedowns family, and her mother’s hopes of a better life

The detail that matters most for the plot is Jason’s housing. It is not free for nothing: by the official description, he runs errands in exchange. Which means that when the story begins, Jason is already in debt rather than a free agent.

Full biographies of all nine people presented officially are in our separate piece on the GTA 6 characters.

The story is divided into chapters

This is a rare case where the shape of the game was given away not by the story page but by the description of the expanded edition. The Ultimate Edition contents listing says that items are uncovered behind each chapter of Jason and Lucia’s story.

Exactly one thing officially follows from that: the game has chapters. How many, whether there is any choice between them and whether player decisions affect the order — Rockstar has not said. More on what the edition actually contains is in our Ultimate Edition breakdown.

It is a single-player story

Rockstar’s own wording is a single-player experience, and the PlayStation Store card labels GTA 6 the same way. There is no co-op and no two-character shared playthrough at launch. We covered that question separately, together with the rumours about a GTA Online 2 date, in our guide to GTA 6 online.

For the story that has a practical consequence: Jason and Lucia’s plot is built for one player and it ends — unlike GTA Online, which never does.

The only official bridge to earlier games

There is one sentence in Lucia’s biography that series fans spotted immediately: her mother had dreamed of a better life since the days the family lived in Liberty City.

Liberty City is the setting of GTA III and GTA IV. It is the only official connection between GTA 6 and earlier games in everything we checked. No returning characters, no mentions of Los Santos and no promised narrative continuity.

⚠️ On the Bonnie and Clyde comparison that circulates in almost every write-up: it does not appear on any of the official pages we checked — the Rockstar site, Only in Leonida and the PlayStation Store card. It did not come from Rockstar, and it cannot be used as a fact about the plot.

What the official story does NOT include

This list matters more than everything above, because fake “story leaks” are built precisely in these gaps:

  • the ending — whether the pair survive, whether there are multiple endings;
  • an antagonist — none of the people presented is framed as an enemy;
  • the number of chapters or missions — only that chapters exist;
  • how long it takes to finish — not a single figure in hours;
  • character-switching — whether you can move freely between Jason and Lucia;
  • how much time passes in-game — the timeline of events is not described;
  • the roles of everyone else — whether all of them are story characters or some are incidental.

Any article stating one of those as a fact is not working from Rockstar.

What the An Extended Look show delivered

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look aired on 27 August 2026 — the first substantial look at the game since the two trailers, which we cover separately in the GTA 6 trailers breakdown.

For this page it changed nothing: the official written description of the story on Rockstar’s pages is still the same paragraph. We do not retell the video — everything that can be called confirmed in writing is collected in our breakdown of the show. Rockstar has named no next date.

The short version

  • The whole official story is one paragraph: a job gone wrong, a state-wide conspiracy, forced interdependence, and survival as the goal.
  • There are two protagonists; Jason starts in debt, Lucia straight out of prison.
  • The story is divided into chapters, but the number has never been given.
  • GTA 6 is a single-player game, and the story has an ending.
  • The only official link to the series is the Liberty City mention in Lucia’s biography.
  • The ending, the antagonist, the length and the character mechanics have NOT been stated.

How many playable characters does GTA 6 have?

Two — Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has not said whether you can switch between them, or whether there are any other playable characters.
