Pocketpair’s official documentation lists Palworld’s shields as: Common Shield, Mega Shield, Giga Shield, Hyper Shield, Ultra Shield, Ancient Shield and Advanced Shield. That’s the complete list of names from the technology page — and names is all it is, because there are no stats attached.

Below we’ll break down how to tell these apart just from the words in each name, what identifiers like Shield_01 mean, and what this source deliberately can’t tell you.

Where this list comes from

This isn’t a fan wiki or someone’s forum spreadsheet. The names come from the technologyids page of Pocketpair’s official documentation — the section that maps every in-game technology to its internal identifier.

The documentation is called the “Palworld Server Guide” and has a version switcher; the version current when this list was compiled is 1.0.3. The game itself is developed and published by the Japanese studio Pocketpair: on its Steam store page it’s listed as both Developer and Publisher.

The key takeaway: dedicated server documentation gives you nomenclature, not stats. Its purpose is to let a server admin reference the right technology by the correct identifier. How much damage a shield absorbs, what it’s crafted from, and what level unlocks it — none of that is on this page, and we’re not going to invent those numbers.

The full list

In-game name Identifier
Common Shield Shield_01
Mega Shield Shield_02
Giga Shield Shield_03
Hyper Shield Shield_04
Ultra Shield Shield_05
Ancient Shield Shield_07
Advanced Shield Shield_SF

That’s everything the official technology table says about shields: a name plus an identifier.

The Mega → Giga → Hyper → Ultra ladder

The easiest part of this list is that four of the names form an obvious sequence. Mega, Giga, Hyper and Ultra are intensifier words you’ll recognise from prefixes and units of measurement, and in the list they run in exactly that order of identifiers: Shield_02, Shield_03, Shield_04, Shield_05.

What that means in practice:

  • The name tells you its neighbours. Spot Giga Shield in a list and you know Mega and Hyper sit next to it in the naming scheme.
  • Word order matches number order. Mega has a lower number than Giga; Giga a lower number than Hyper; Hyper a lower number than Ultra. That’s a property of the list, and it’s right there in the table.
  • Hyper and Ultra are the usual mix-up — both sound like “the top tier”. Tell them apart by identifier instead: Hyper is Shield_04, Ultra is Shield_05.

⚠️ What we’re not claiming: that a higher number automatically means more defence, more weight, or a later unlock. The documentation doesn’t state any such relationship — the identifier order is just the order in the table, not a measured stat. It looks logical, which is exactly why the temptation to add “so Ultra must be the strongest” is strongest here. We’re not writing that.

Three names that break the pattern

The rest of the list is built differently — and that’s precisely what makes them easy to spot.

Common Shield (Shield_01). “Common” doesn’t try to sound like a power tier at all — it’s the one name in the list that reads as plain and ordinary, and it sits first in the identifier sequence.

Ancient Shield (Shield_07). “Ancient” breaks the intensifier scale entirely: it describes origin, not degree. Its identifier also sits apart from the Mega–Ultra block of four. We cover technologies with the Ancient prefix in more detail in our separate guide to the technology tree.

Advanced Shield (Shield_SF). The most interesting entry on the list — and the only one where letters replace a number in the identifier: Shield_SF. “Advanced” suggests a step up, but structurally this shield clearly sits outside the numbered sequence. What the SF suffix stands for isn’t explained in the documentation, and we won’t guess either.

A simple rule for readers: if the name contains Mega, Giga, Hyper or Ultra, it’s a rung on the numbered ladder. If it’s Common, Ancient or Advanced, it’s a standalone category, not a rung.

Cold-resistant, heat-resistant and named shields: what’s not on the list

Worth stating plainly, since the question comes up a lot. In the shield list from the official technology table:

  • there are no “cold” or “heat” variants — no shield name references temperature resistance at all;
  • there are no items named after specific Pals — every name is either tier-based or category-based;
  • there are no stats whatsoever — no defence, durability, weight, price, or crafting time.

If you’ve come across a “cold-resistant” or “named” Palworld shield somewhere with specific numbers attached, it isn’t from the official technology table, and we won’t repeat claims like that. For comparison, see how naming works across other gear categories in our armour list.

One more detail visible at a glance: between Shield_05 and Shield_07 in our list there’s no entry with the identifier Shield_06. Whether it exists in the game and what it’s called isn’t established either way by our sources. A gap in the numbering is a fact about the list, not proof the item doesn’t exist.

Progression order: what we can and can’t say

The most common reason people search for this list is to figure out “what comes after what”. The honest answer: we know the order of identifiers in the table; we don’t know the order you actually get shields in-game.

What the documentation gives you:

  1. Exact official names — in English, with no spelling variants.
  2. An identifier for each technology.
  3. The sequence of entries within the table itself.

What the documentation doesn’t give you:

  1. What point in the game a shield becomes available.
  2. What unlocks it, or how.
  3. Whether an earlier shield tier is required before you can reach the next one.

So when someone lays out a “correct shield upgrade order” with unlock levels attached, the official technology table isn’t the source of that. We’re not making claims like that, and we’re not filling in numbers to support them.

Who actually needs this list

The most direct use case is server administration. The technologyids page exists so that, when configuring a dedicated server, you can reference a technology by its internal name rather than an approximate name from memory. If you’re setting up your own server, see our guide to Palworld multiplayer and dedicated servers.

The second use case is verification. In-game names can differ from how guides describe them, and the official table acts as the arbiter here: if a name doesn’t appear in it, it’s worth double-checking separately.

The third is tracking changes over time. The documentation is versioned, and the version switcher lets you see exactly which version you’re working from. For how Palworld updates work more broadly, see our guide on how Palworld updates work.

In short

Pocketpair’s official technology table lists seven shield entries: Common Shield, Mega Shield, Giga Shield, Hyper Shield, Ultra Shield, Ancient Shield and Advanced Shield — with identifiers running from Shield_01 to Shield_07 plus a separate Shield_SF. This source gives names and identifiers, not stats, recipes or unlock order — anything beyond that would have to be invented, so we haven’t.

Frequently asked questions

What shields are there in Palworld?

Pocketpair's official technology table lists Common Shield, Mega Shield, Giga Shield, Hyper Shield, Ultra Shield, Ancient Shield and Advanced Shield. That's a list of names only — the documentation doesn't give stats.

Which shield is best in Palworld?

Our sources don't answer that. The official technology table shows names and IDs, not defence, durability or weight, so there's no way to build a tier list from it.

What do Shield_01 and Shield_SF mean?

These are the internal technology IDs the shields go by in the dedicated server documentation. Why the suffix SF is used instead of a number isn't explained anywhere in the docs.

Are there cold- or heat-resistant shields in Palworld?

Not in the shield list from the official technology table. Every name there is built around a tier word, not resistance to cold or heat.

Where does this list come from, and how current is it?

From the technologyids page of Pocketpair's official documentation. The docs are called the "Palworld Server Guide" and have a version switcher; the version current when this list was compiled is 1.0.3.

Are any shields named after specific Pals?

No named items appear in the official documentation's shield list. Every entry is either a tier word (Mega, Giga, Hyper, Ultra) or a standalone category word (Common, Ancient, Advanced).
