Minecraft Bedrock Achievements: Add-ons and Gamerscore
Contents
Minecraft achievements in Bedrock Edition now count even in worlds with add-ons installed — this has been the rule since the update published on 15 July 2025. Previously, an add-on in a world blocked achievement progress; that block is gone now.
Below: what exactly changed, how it connects to Gamerscore, which mode achievements actually count in, and which questions the official material leaves open.
What changed
Before this update, the choice was strict: either you played with your own set of add-ons, or you collected achievements. One excluded the other — an installed add-on blocked achievement progress in that world.
The update published on 15 July 2025 removed that trade-off. You can now install add-ons in a Bedrock Edition world and still earn achievements at the same time.
| Before the update | After 15 July 2025 | |
|---|---|---|
| Add-ons in the world | blocked achievement progress | no longer block it |
| Limit on number of add-ons | — | no limit |
The second row matters more than it looks. The official page directly confirms there’s no limit on the number of installed add-ons that still allow achievements to be earned. In other words, the rule isn’t “one add-on is fine, then we cut you off.” The number of mods in a world is, by itself, no longer a reason to lose progress.
If you’re still getting your bearings on how Bedrock differs from the rest of the game’s builds, start with the guide on Java vs Bedrock Edition — everything below applies specifically to Bedrock.
Why this matters if you’re tracking progress
Achievements in Minecraft aren’t a closed, in-game-only system. Earning an achievement raises your Gamerscore, and Gamerscore is Xbox’s achievement system, shared across every game on the platform.
That has one practical consequence. Your Minecraft progress isn’t a separate counter that lives “inside Minecraft” — it adds to the same overall total as your progress in other Xbox games. For a player who’s deliberately building up Gamerscore, any reason achievements stop being tracked isn’t a cosmetic annoyance — it’s a direct loss against a total shared across your whole library.
That’s exactly why the old add-on rule was so frustrating. You’d install a pack, play for months, and none of it would count toward anything the whole time. That trap is gone now.
Survival only
One other limitation hasn’t gone anywhere, and it’s worth keeping separate from the add-on story.
According to the official comparison table on minecraft.net, the “Achievements/Trophies” feature is available only in Survival mode. That’s not a bug and not a side effect of add-ons — it’s how the feature is described to begin with.
The practical takeaway is simple: if you want to experiment with add-ons and watch your Gamerscore climb, the world needs to be a Survival world. A creative world for building is one thing; a world for progress is another.
Example achievement: a caravan of llamas
The official article that announced the change cites, as its example achievement, the task of bringing together a caravan of at least five llamas.
The example is telling precisely because it’s not “beat the story” or “kill a boss” — it’s an ordinary bit of gameplay you could stumble into without trying, taming animals and leading them along behind you. If taming is new territory for you, there’s a separate guide on taming a horse, wolf and cat that covers the animal-handling mechanics in more depth.
We’re deliberately not listing any other achievement names here: the caravan example is the only one the official source actually provides.
Java Edition: what the official table actually says
This point needs care, because it gets misreported online fairly often.
The official comparison table on minecraft.net has a row for “Achievements/Trophies” noting it’s Survival-only. In the Bedrock Edition column it’s marked as available; in the Java Edition column it’s marked as unavailable.
| Feature | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Achievements/Trophies (Survival only) | not marked available | marked available |
And that’s the entirety of what the source says. It doesn’t claim Java Edition has no progress-tracking system whatsoever — it simply doesn’t mark the “Achievements/Trophies” row as enabled for Java. We’re not claiming that either. If you want the wider picture of differences between the game’s builds, see the guide on game versions.
How to make sure your progress actually counts
A checklist that follows directly from the facts above:
- Play Bedrock Edition. It’s the build the official table marks as having the “Achievements/Trophies” feature available.
- Keep the world in Survival mode. The same table states the feature only works in Survival.
- Update the game. The add-on compatibility rule arrived with the update published on 15 July 2025 — on an older build, you’re still under the old conditions.
- Install add-ons without worrying about the count. The official page sets no limit on how many installed add-ons still allow achievements to be earned.
- Watch your Gamerscore. Since earning achievements raises Gamerscore, that number ticking up is your visible confirmation that progress is being tracked.
What we’re not claiming
This section matters more than any guesswork, so here it is in full.
We’re not claiming achievements get retroactively awarded. Whether the update affects worlds where progress was previously blocked isn’t described in the official source. Not described means we don’t write it.
We’re not claiming this rule extends to every kind of game modification. The official article talks specifically about add-ons in Bedrock Edition. Anything that technically falls outside “add-ons” isn’t covered by the source.
We’re not naming a total number of achievements, or listing their names. The only example in the official material is the caravan of at least five llamas. We won’t reproduce any “full list of achievements with exact counts,” because we don’t have a verified source for one.
We’re not claiming Java Edition has no progress tracking at all. Again: the table simply doesn’t mark the “Achievements/Trophies” row as available for Java.
We’re making no claims about specific platforms, consoles, or account linking. All that’s confirmed is that Gamerscore is Xbox’s achievement system, shared across every game on the platform. The technical conditions for how it’s awarded aren’t detailed by the official source referenced here.
What this means in practice
The main change here is behavioural, not technical. Before 15 July 2025, add-ons forced an either-or choice: either your own set of content, or achievement progress and Gamerscore. Players who cared about their score simply left add-ons alone.
Now those two ways of playing don’t conflict. You can keep a single Survival world, install add-ons in it, and calmly lead a caravan of llamas through that same world for the achievement.
Everything else stays as it was: Survival, Bedrock Edition, an up-to-date game version. And no numbers beyond the ones the official source actually gave.
In short
Since the update published on 15 July 2025, add-ons in Bedrock Edition no longer block achievements, and there’s no limit on how many you can install — and every achievement earned raises Gamerscore, Xbox’s shared achievement total. The feature itself is marked as available only in Survival and only in Bedrock Edition.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get achievements in Minecraft Bedrock with add-ons installed?
Yes. Since the update published on 15 July 2025, players can earn achievements in Bedrock Edition worlds even with add-ons installed. Before that, an installed add-on blocked achievement progress.
How many add-ons can you install and still have achievements work?
There's no limit — the official page confirms this directly. The number of installed add-ons is, by itself, no longer a reason achievements stop being tracked.
How do Minecraft achievements relate to Gamerscore?
Earning an achievement raises your Gamerscore, which is Xbox's achievement system shared across every game on the platform. So progress in Minecraft adds to the same overall total as progress in other Xbox games.
Do achievements work in Creative mode?
According to the official comparison table on minecraft.net, the "Achievements/Trophies" feature is available only in Survival mode. Stick to a Survival world if you want progress to count.
Are there achievements in Java Edition?
In the official comparison table, the "Achievements/Trophies" row is marked as unavailable for Java Edition and available for Bedrock Edition. The table makes no broader claims about progress tracking in Java, and neither do we.
What example achievement does Mojang itself give?
The official article cites, as an example, the task of bringing together a caravan of at least five llamas.
