What Y-level to mine at
The most important number for mining is the height level, the Y-coordinate.
- Generation range. Diamond ore appears from Y=16 down to Y=-63. Above Y=16 there are no diamonds at all.
- Peak density. The highest concentration of ore is at Y=-58 and Y=-59. That’s the depth worth basing your main mine or tunnel around if diamonds specifically, not other resources, are the goal.
- Distribution shape. The amount of ore rises smoothly from Y=16 toward the peak values and falls off just as smoothly toward Y=-63 — meaning the edges of the range give far less ore than the middle-to-low band.
How many diamonds a block gives
